does the the pole and the wall have to be 100 percent vertical or just the pole
 
neither have to be exactly upright as adjustment can be made on the dish.

For a fixed dish NO.
For a motorised dish YES, the pole must be vertical.


When asking a question, to help others help you, try putting a little more information in your post. Pebbles answer was perfectly correct, given the information that was provided.
 
The pole has to be 100% vertical east/west as there is no way to correct this at the dish. If the pole is out of plumb north/south this can be adjusted out with the motor elevation.
 
Perfectly correct in that if the mast isn't vertical in all directions it can be compensated for.

Having said that, I don't think it's particularly helpful saying that when advising the average first time installer, it really provides a rod for their own back if they don't get the mast plumb. I would personally advise that they get that step correct to make the rest of the job easier and if they use a set of T&Ks, there is no reason why it shouldn't be plumb.

I agree, but the thing to get straight is the motor, not the pole. For example, after a lot of wasted time, I found that if pole was vertical then my 1224 motor was leaning to the west by more than a degree.
 
Was there a problem with the motor bracket?

There must be but it's not visible. I've had the motor on and off a few times but can't see anything wrong. First I get the pole vertical then I bolt the motor on. Afterwards I put the level on top of the motor and it is tilting just over one degree (to the east I think it was) so I have to adjust the pole to get the motor level. You can see how I am measuring for level in my pictures.
 
One degree is negligible, and can be compensated for in the other adjustments available to you, despite what others might say.

Not when it's east/west.
 
Sorry, I was talking about the base offset, a faulty motor drive above two of the adjustments is unlikely to have a fix.
