Listen Up Possible Phishing/Scamming alert - New Type - BT landline!

Morning

You have all probably had or heard about the telephone calls from “Microsoft Technical Support” saying that there is a problem with your computer and that the person needs to connect to it to fix something, and which then turns out to cost people an infected computer and probably then a lot of money – but the following is a new one on me!

Yesterday I got a call from “someone” appearing to say that he was from some sort of BT “Technical Support” about “your BT Landline” – I got him to confirm that he was talking about a BT Landline, and then said “Sorry, we don’t have a BT Line” (which is true – it is a dedicated, not leased, Virgin landline!) and put the phone down! He never called back!!!

This seems to have been pretty obviously a “phishing”/scamming call because, had he been a genuine BT Tech Support guy, then he would have known that we did not have one of their lines and would not have called us – but it could easily catch out someone who does have a BT line (which is most people because they either have BT lines, or lines which are leased from BT, or don’t actually know who supplies their landlines). I don’t know where such a call might lead, but it could turn out to be very expensive if you get “caught”!

Therefore I suggest that if you do get any calls like this then do what I did (even if you do have a BT Landline then just make up something if you must), and/or if you know someone who has/might have one then maybe warn them of the possibilities. Perfectly happy for you to pass this on.

All the best.

John

Interesting.

I wonder just here this particular scam was heading.

Thankfully we no longer have a Landline of any sort and our FWA provider is a two-man and an Office girl concern, sponsored by North Yorkshire County Council.

Just Googled this (Other Search Engines are available) and it seems to have been around for some years. Not heard of it until you mentioned it. Variant of Microsoft scam.

Only ever had one of the MS scam calls, strung them along for as long as I could stand (longer they're kept on the line, the less time they have to try and scam someone else less knowledgeable about computers & scams) and snapped at them when they tried to get me to go to the system services and hung up... :D

As for the BT scam, I've heard of that one, they basically call up, claim they're from BT, you say "Yeah, riiiiiiight", and they try to "prove it" by saying they will disconnect the line remotely (they're actually just muting their headset), you hang up, they stay on the line (remote callers can hold open the line just by not hanging up), you pick up the phone after a minute or so and hear silence (they hear you do this), assume it was a real disconnection and hang up again, they drop the call and immediately re-dial and when you pick up they say "haHAAAA! Told you we wuz BT!", then proceed to rape your wallet...

Best way to deal with that, find something suitably ear-piercingly loud (such as a sports whistle) and just sound off down the line until they disconnect, or if you have another phone to hand, pick it up and place the microphone of one to the speaker of the other and let feedback ensue... :)

Sadly not a good idea:

A 61-year-old German woman has been fined €800 for blowing a whistle down the telephone at a call-centre worker and damaging her hearing - after she got fed up with constant cold-calls to her house.

If it's a scammer calling, they're not exactly going to call the police to report that in the midst of committing an act of fraud the call recipient damaged their hearing, are they? :-lol

Fun with scammers ...
lol

The Scammer sounds "plausible", or at least would be for many people.

I try very hard never to get inveigled into anything like that, although I did once get caught to the tune of $40 when looking on-line for PC clean-up tools - never again, I hope!

Just glad he's on our side ..
:D
Buy yourself a clone dock ..and clone your hard drive regularly ..
It's the foolproof way out of ANY PC Phishing scam situation..
..and costs a lot less than 20,000 rupees including the spare drive...

Comes in handy for O/S failures too..

Beware black hats ...they will try to 'own' you..

So ...having uploaded a few prank and funny links...
This one walks you through the process they may use..
So ...very informative ...

..This is lengthy but worth watching for the detail...

Take a look on Iplayer at today's Rip Off Britain on Cyber Crime which I have just finished watching - not a lot really new but some more interesting insights into how scams, ransomware and so on can work.

Today's Sunday Times Personal Finance Section has a front-page piece about this BT Scam.

I rarely answer the landline phone, the calls are never for me.So Mrs Ponti gets all the scam calls. She is good at stringing them on until they get fed up though sometimes that takes some doing.
She keeps telling the so called microsoft man that it is a scam but he still keep on going.Today a different one.
The woman says " Alert Alert Your credit card has been compromised press one".
She put the phone down.I do not know what would happen if one was pressed.I can see that some people would panic and press one.

I'm envious: All I get are the odd calls telling me I'm eligible for a free Boiler.

Of course, as SWMBO will confirm, I'm more than happy with the Old Boiler

Ponti
Thank goodness your wife is quick-witted - we all need to spread the "news" of what has/could happen!

From what I read a few days ago, you hardly ever turn the c/h on - but we all hope that the "Old Boiler" is kept well stoked-up regardless!;)

Oh, yes: Fettled on a regular basis.
