Quick Question about BluRay players

V for Vendetta looks to have been a HD DVD format disc so I'd say no for playback in a blu-ray player.

Like many Blu-Rays the extra mini features are in 480/576 as they are usually just the TV spot/promo/behind the scenes features that get broadcast on SD TV around the time of the film release. On the HD DVD only discs these features are still on the HD layers.

Your safe bet for playback in a bluray player would be HD DVD Combo disks as the DVD layer is on side B. (No HD playback though)
As for the Twin Format discs, no idea but would be interesting to try. In theory yes as the DVD layer should be the default layer which the player can read and it should just ignore the HD layers.

There were 3 types of HD DVD released on the market.
HD DVD - Either HD-30 or HD-15 single sided
HD DVD Combo - HD-30/HD-15 one side and DVD-5/9 the other side
HD DVD Twin Format - Usually 3 layer single sided: 1 Layer DVD and 2 Layers for HD-30

Combo and Twin Format were supposed to gain acceptance from the public and get them buying hd dvd even without a hd dvd player as they could use the disc in any dvd player. Unfortunately the 50% price increase attached to them killed that idea from the start. Warner pledged to release all films in HD DVD Combo (huge logo across the top of the box) and started with The Departed.

At the same time hybrid/combo formats for Blu-Ray were demonstrated but with the acceptance of Digital Copy and studios like Disney putting DVDs in the same package as blu-rays the hybrid bluray format isn't required.

In the real world I am used to dealing with very difficult people.

I never need to take deep breath or calm down because I am always calm and professional.

Answer: Since the Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD formats are incompatible, due to differences in actual physical disc structure, you cannot play a Blu-ray Disc in an HD-DVD format player, nor can you play an HD-DVD in a Blu-ray Disc format player.

And your answers

#2 - I seem to recall you could get a combined Blu Ray and HD DVD for computers. I don't think it was a burner, it just played ROMs. It was available at great expense as it was new technology. Now that HD DVD is obsolete, it may not be made anymore.

#4 - I assume you did search for dual Blu Ray and HD DVD players?!

With the obsolescence of HD DVD, there is no market for such devices. Blu Ray players only play Blu Ray as they were in direct competition with HD DVD like VHS and Betamax were. There is no point in them licensing the technology as there are no new releases that use the HD DVD format.

So, you are in a Betamax situation here.

That said, Blu Ray is still in its infancy. Take a look at the prices for read only drives and recorders for computer use...

The cheapest solution may turn out to be to buy the title again, but in Blu Ray and attempt to flog the HD DVD. There is no guarantee it will sell as it is of even less use than Betamax - you could record on Betamax many times, the HD DVD disc is not even big enough to be a frisbee

Hardly identical, nor any form of succinct answer to the original question.
