Well, I would expect that it would have been mentioned in match of the day or in other match reports, so maybe there is something in the offside rule that deals with this case? I am pretty sure when he passed the ball there was only the keeper in front of him.

At first I thought he was offside, but I think that he was behind the ball when the ball was played (in which case he was not offside).

So the rule says that if you are behind the ball, when it was played, it does not count as offside regardless of where the defenders are?

Correct, if you are behind the ball then you are onside.

well its up to the linesman so give them some grief as they have to think if its offside or not

i don't think it was offside but i'm sort of biased

I watched the match and must confess that I had not even considered the possibility of it being offside, as he was running towards the ball and was well behind it when Rooney kicked it.

You can use the [tube] bbcode with the youtube number after it and then the same but with a / inserted before tube to close it. :

it was not offside as there is officially a blind spot in that part of the pitch (as demostrated in the final minute of the match ;))
