Reading a Linux formatted disk

I thought I'd post here as well so that any Linux bods who only read here could help me.

I have a problem with a hard disk in a Huma Fosat HDR and I want to put it onto my eternal hard drive adaptor and then try to read (and hopefully fix!) it with my laptop.

Could try Backtrack Paul -

Fits nicely on a USB stick. I've used it to read all manner of file systems on my drives.

You could also try Portable Ubuntu. It runs inside windows so, you can have both Linux functionality from within windows.

I've just come back from a weekend away (been down near to your area Llew!) and I've got some things to do so it'll probably be tomorrow evening before I have a chance.
 
Just by chance I was given a faulty PC from work last week, and it has a Linux o/s on both drives.

On boot up it says 'Community 10.1' and then freezes.

Is this a modern system or one that should be upgraded, if so, what to ?

It seems to be booting with the latest official Mandrake version of linux which is 10.1 however a quick google reveals that others are having problems with hardware compatability with this version, a downgrade to 9.2 or 10 may help
 
Thanks, the last person that had the lid off upgraded the processor on the motherboard, which may be behind the start up issue.
