I live in a valley and can’t receive the Astra signals to pick up Sky TV. But my friend lives on the side of the mountain and can receive Sky TV. My friend’s house has a clean view of mine about 2 miles away. Is there anyway I can capture the signal at my friend’s location and transmit to my position? I can set up satellites at both locations.

I am looking for something fairly simple; I have tuned my own satellites in the past and own a satellite tracker. Can anyone recommend any advice on what sort of a transmitter I should use or ideas on what I can do to solve this problem?

Thanks

I wonder if the valley really is at the root of your apparent lack of line of sight ........

The "look angle" is of the order of 25 degrees upwards, which means the valley would have to be more akin to a ravine to have any effect.

Are there other more local "obstructions" like trees, neighbouring properties etc. that are in the way (so to speak!) ?

I am not aware of any deep valleys or indeed mountains in London

Fantastic - if your IP address is correct you are a member who lives in Andorra :D

I had a lovely holiday in Arinsal last summer, and I can quite believe the ravine type problems :-worship

Its not really possible to capture the signals and transfer it over two miles, so you will need to think about locating the dish somewhere not too far from you but maybe up the top of a tall scaffold pole type construction.

Busted, yes in La Massana and the mountain blocks the signal.

Your best bet might be a slingbox and a couple of wifi antennae, have your digibox located at his place and watch via the slingbox on your own local network on your PC, or using a slingcatcher.

You could try having a dedicated receiver at your friends house, then use a high power video sender with external antennas (high gain yagi or dishes).

The slingbox is definately an option that I will look into. Thanks

So there's definately no way to retransmit the signal across the ravine, what about a giant mirror on the side of the mountain to reflect the signal?

Is that legal?

It would depend on your local bylaws. Technically it's probably not (for a high power system) - but it would more than likely be overlooked unless you're causing interference (which would be minimized if you're using directional antennas).

Well now we know where you are, your problem is somewhat more understandable!!

My use of the word "ravine" now seems both fortuitous and apt - prescient, even.

A WiMAX solution, as rolfw has suggested, is the modern version of MMDS and it looks good.

The only problem is that anyone who knows anything about these things (like the regulators) will instantly recognize the antennae so a well hidden or disguised line of sight solution may be best.

Here is a fairly typical view of an Andorra village. This is looking down on Arinsal from the road up to the ski tows and will give you an idea of the problems our friend in Andorra is suffering from

Great photo.

Moving house to somewhere with a clear southerly aspect might be easier!!!

Its a beautiful place :) Well recommended if you want a quiet holiday for a couple of weeks in the summer. Lots of hill / mountain walking, lovely flowers, and solitude.

I think hexah is right, my best bet is to move house. Having an antenna broadcasting Sky TV isn't the best idea, given the Andorran Governments fondness for subjugating its citizens
