RIP Anton Yelchin

The rebooted franchise hasn't made a great impression with me but sad to hear of his passing and especially the manner.

Oh dear this must have passed me by somehow, I like the rebooted franchise and think they have a marvellous job re-inventing the characters. The films are clean and crisp and yet keep the same feel about them as the previous films, I especially liked Anton's character Chekov, with his somewhat unbelievably bad Russian accent. I see his vehicle was one of the million recalls of that vehicle for a fault on the gear selector allowing the vehicle to drive away in neutral. Could be a lawsuit in the offing there

The vehicle I currently own (and if I recall the last one, and the one before that ) will always 'drive away' in neutral. Select 'park' and/or apply the handbrake', it's the only way to be sure.

Keep them peeled.

Nobody in the US of A (or even canada) uses the Handbrake (or e-brake, or emergency brake, or parking brake, or "what's that thing do?"), and this is a good example of why it should be used, cos it prevents cars rolling away, so long as it's not made out of chinesium of course...
 
while the initial investigation treated the issue as a mechanical defect, it's looking more and more like the problem has at least something to do with driver error due to a poorly-designed shifter.

Every car manufactured is equipped with something known as a parking brake! Now, some of you might find this being a radical concept, but it is there to use when you PARK YOUR CAR! The PARK position is only a lock on your transmission. In a case such as this, had the parking brake been applied, the vehicle would not have rolled. The way I was taught to secure a car when I learned how to drive, is to set the parking brake BEFORE you put the car in PARK, or with a manual transmission, take it out of gear. Drivers are in serious need of re-education!

“I pulled into my driveway and put the car in park,” a Grand Cherokee owner from Oklahoma said in a written statement to the agency in late 2014. “When stepping out of my car, it started rolling backwards. The door was open, so it knocked me to the ground and I rolled to get out of the path of the wheel, only getting missed by seconds.”

While that owner said he received only bruises, federal regulators said their investigation found serious injuries, including three people with a fractured pelvis. Others included a ruptured bladder, fractured kneecap, broken ribs, leg damage, broken nose and facial lacerations requiring stitches.

What comes around goes around.

Early Model T Fords had a type of transmission that could slip from neutral into drive especially when the oil was cold.
