Roof time

I've see a lot of "turns" on exposed walls where the U clamps in the wall mount (Every point you make about the poor design is spot on by the way) haven't been tight enough to prevent the L tube being twisted around with the most common resting position for the dish being pointing almost if not totally straight down. It dosnt help that half these installers have the open end of the L tube facing up thus giving high winds even more of a chance in moving the tube round.

Older members here may recall the Alba branded version of the early Astra 1 dishes for Sky, which used a parallelogram arrangement for the wall, meaning the dish would bounce on the bracket under high winds to relieve the stress, but always point on station when doing the business.

They have turned my 40cm offset heavy duty bracket into a 30cm AND stole clearance with an absolutely stupid looking plastic window ledge insert that sticks out without exaggeration 3 inch?? Looks completely daft.

That's the dish parked on 30 West in the pic, if you can see "bend" in the ladders there probably is but exaggerated by the angle of the pic. Those 4 metre telescopic ladders are awesome investment though, really handy.

Well whoever said "enjoy the mold" or the like earlier in this thread gets an award for being right, discovered blue (Why is it called blue mould when its black in appearance?) mould on the toilet wall next to pan pedestal. We have been here for two years plus, NEVER has there been any mould in this house. Cleaned the affected area with white spirit vinegar. Complete idiots.

Hmm.... Mouldy cheese...never tried, didn't some Tory MP try and get a good old health scare going that managed to see the sales of such cheese drop? Minds me of that Edwina Curry idiot and the eggs fiasco.
 
I think the main problem which causes mould is that moisture from inside the property gets into the plaster, and can then escape through it and the brickwork (or whatever) - until, that is, the "escape route" is blocked with some form of vapour barrier. External wall insulation generally incorporates some form of vapour barrier(s), and so the internally-generated moisture can't then escape, the plaster becomes continually damp, and so, voila, mould can form (especially if the internal air temperatures are not that high)

Therefore some form of dehumidifier in the bathroom might help GL to keep the humidity/moisture down to levels where the mould cannot develop.

Edited: hopefully, over time, the complete wall structure (within which there is probably still quite a lot of trapped moisture) inside the external insulation will gradually dry out and the internal dampness/mould issues should decrease/disappear.

In retrospect, I think I am fortunate that I installed internal wall insulation with 2 vapour barrier layers a long time ago, and so there is very little depth of plaster (only the top 12mm of that wall insulation) that is exposed to any internal moisture (not that there is very much anyway) and that plaster soon dried out completely because the house has always been quite warm since then. Therefore the conditions leading to internal mould have just not developed, and so adding the external wall insulation well outside the internal stuff has made no difference at all. Now even more a fan of internal wall insulation!

Mould on cheese is a natural process, but eggs contaminated with salmonella is quite another because they do pose a threat to public health. From a recent TV interview given by Ms Curry(ie?) the steps taken by farmers over the last few years have dramatically reduced the levels in eggs, and thus the risks to the public (but still be careful when you buy prepared chickens because a lot of those are contaminated with other pathogens - SWMBO will now only buy "roast in the bag" ones because any pathogens are trapped inside the bags and killed by the roasting process).

What she said was actually correct in that salmonella was endemic in the UK national flock at the time but this was misinterpreted by the uneducated press and others with an axe to grind. She didn't help herself though by failing to make the distinction between eggs and the flock.
 
They roast in a bag chickens are a good idea for the very fact there's no fat spurting all over the walls ect of the oven thus a lot less to clean!

Mate as soon as I have the towel round me I toggle off the mains switch for the shower and crack the window open right out until the first safety latch catches, also have one of those crap extraction fans in the wall of the bathroom as well. The white spirit vinegar will have killed the mould that was there, if it returns then the idiots will hear from me.
