It's actually "Design obsolescence"
Making people pay unnecessarily for things that should not fail, it's a false economy...

Two weeks ago my trusty old Epson R300 printer decided that it needed a service. It says that the ink pad has reached the end of its life span. The printer worked perfectly up to then. Now it will not work untill it gets a new pad.Which would probably cost more than a new printer, which I have got.It is now going to recycling. What a waste.

I had the same happen to my Epson C46, then I did something about it:

Repairing my Epson C46 printer...

If I could be arsed to buy new ink for it, it'll probably still work today, but I rarely have a need to print anything so it keeps drying out and clogging up...

Sticky case syndrome is a well known issue in the radio hobby, for the Eton receivers. I have the Eton E1 which suffers very badly from this. There is an E1 Yahoo group, where many pages have been devoted to the subject, and much information on Google as well. The cleaning solutions (literally) are mostly American products, based on Isopropyl Alcohol (Rubbing Alcohol), which need to be applied with care. I haven't tried any of these, as I don't need to handle the receiver very much.

I have been browsing several photo forums and it seems as this a not uncommon problem on cameras and lenses from the mid to late 90s - particularly but not limited to Nikon F70 cameras and some Sigma lenses. To get rid of the stickiness the two answers seem to be either Goo Gone or isopropyl alcohol but the only permanent solution is removal and replacement of the rubber covering (Nikon actually sell replacements).

Perhaps one could consider a change in subject matter, I would imagine a nice landscape or cloud formation would alleviate the issue, well for most photographers anyway
