A friend's box went t*ts up following a storm and so I gave him my a spare. Next day he complained that film 4 said No signal and a couple of other channels were missing. I swapped his box for another and film 4 still said no signal but the other channels were fine. now 2 days later he only has BBC and ITV (i.e. they're the only channels in EPG). Power cycled the box and it did a search and now even film4 is working. I've used both boxes previously without problem, so presumably we need to look at the dish/lnb for problems?

Certainly sounds that way. :)

If it's after a rainstorm check the sealing where the cable joins the LNB. It's possible that there has been some water forced into the cable. You have to replace a substatial length, or even all to be absolutely certain, of the cable if there has been water ingress.

The join should be covered in a rubbery material called sef-amalgamating tape or a special sealing sleeve. If there's nothing there then I would replace the whole cable anyway.
