Last night the picture on my TV was breaking up and eventually I lost the signal. This morning I tried my Satellite Finder for the first time but the scale did not light up nor did the meter reading moved.

The dish has not moved and the cable from the receiver was intacted to the LNB before the test with the SF.

The Satellite Finder is FORTEC STAR and this instruction on the User's Guide did not happen.

"Make sure your satellite receiver is on.The Satallite Finder's scale should be lighted at this time and the meter reading should be around 2"

Does this mean that there could be a break in the cable?

I'll have another go before calling the experts.

If the dish hadn't moved, why did you decide to try the Sat Finder?

Either it actually has moved or, if you are positive it hasn't, your problem is likely to be water ingress into cable, poor connection or both.

And, as you thought, there might be physical damage to the cable.

Check/Remake the connection at the LNB first.

Also do the obvious and check the connection at the back of your Receiver hasn't come loose.

Finally, please tell us about your system - make/model of Receiver, size of Dish, LNB type etc.

We are in the dark right now!

Worrying about the SAt Finder is at the end of the list of things to do.

If it's a cheap meter the LNB could have failed. The cable, connections are the easiest, and cheapest, to check first.

Yes I did after writing to the forum. The cable was just hanging on.Silly me-Lesson learned.

Thank you all

Well thankyou for having the courage to cough to that one!

We've all failed to spot the obvious on occasion.

I know you got the actual problem solved (no picture on tv).

But to address your question of satellite finder not lighting up:
Did you connect the sat finder to the box AND the LNB? (two cables, one from box to satfinder, one from satfinder to LNB)?
Assuming you did, and the cable was loose at the box end, then that explains why the meter didn't light up.
(The box supplies the power to the sat finder.)
You can check again if it works now.
If you can be bothered, now that everything works :)
