Satellite dish advice

Hi Team

Is there away i can span a signal from satellite dish to a cisco switch, run the Ethernet cables from the switch to different rooms of the house then to where the tv tops are, the current set up is all copper cables from the dish to some weird looking boxes with horrible quality to the room, obviously I am gonna need the media converters from copper to Ethernet or vice versa. I know a bit about cisco switches and i though i might gives a shot but get advise before i do it, Any other suggestions is welcomed

Yes, what you describe is an in-house IPTV solution.

Either done using commercial-grade equipment as used in hotels (expensive compared to alternative), or using a couple of PCs running Linux, some DVB-reception cards/boxes, and various mutations of TV-headend software and media players.

In either case, it requires quite a bit of hands-on and fiddling with Linux, home-network, tv-software etc.
So if that's your thing, you should go for the TV-headend based solution.

In either case, there's nothing special about Cisco - you can use any networking equipment to do this.

If you just want to watch TV in several rooms, and rather spend time watching tv than linux consoles, buy a bunch of HDMI extenders (with IR loopback), put the STBs near where the coax comes in, and run the HDMI signals through the Cat-5E og Cat-6 cables to where the tvs are.

Much easier to build, maintain and support...

@st1 thanks for your help the HDMI extenders (attached) have 1 ethernet jack and another port, is that port a coxial cable port cause the antena i have uses cox cable from the dish also i will have the 100 meter cat5/6 limitation, iam sorry if sound confused but I am actually confused :), thanks man

It's not really Ethernet (as far as I know). It simply uses Cat5e/6 cables to extend your HDMI connections. You can't plug it into networking equipment...
 
The satellite LO signal (what come down from the LNB) is too high a frequency (around 900 to 2450 MHz depending on the system) for normal RF to CAT5/6 converters, and it also is too wide a bandwidth (450 to 900 MHz. depending on the system) for normal RF to CAT5/6 converters, they are mostly made to interface a single CCTV camera to a cat 5/6 cable. (4.5 MHz video/audio)

The closest thing I have come up with is a satellite LO to fiber converter, then fiber to CAT6, but it still will not work through any type of router or switch, it has to be a dedicated CAT6 pair, one for TX and one for RX, this is very costly.

The best way was the HDMI to CAT6 converters ST1 mentioned, you can get an HDMI splitter and run several HDMI to CAT6 converters with a CAT6 to HDMI down converter at each end out to the TV's, but they all are going to be on the same channel as the main TV.

If the TV sets are within 30 to 50 feet from the main HDMI splitter you can run directly with HDMI extenders and cables to each, but again your back to the same channel as the main TV.

But if you want separate channels and satellites at each TV then a multi switch should be used at the dish and individual receivers at each TV set would be better.

No, that's the power in (external DC power).
The HDMI extender does not handle RF signals - only digital uncompressed video/audio.
You plug the coax into the set-top box, not the HDMI extender.
The role of the the se-top-box (STB) to translate the RF signals into a digital video signal (HDMI), that is then fed into the HDMI extender.

The HDMI Extender boxes has a sender and a receiver.
They sender has an HDMI input, RJ-45 Ethernet for transmission, and a power connector.
The receiver has an HDMI output, RJ-45 Ehternet for reception, and a power connector.
Sometimes not both units need to be powered, they can apparently draw power from one of the other connectors.

If you want cheap and cheerful, you could have your central PC running some Media centre software, and then use one or more Raspberry Pi running Kodi at each of your viewing locations
