How to Sleep Better is the latest BBC1 show to be fronted by Professor Robert Winston and will air in peak-time on February 2. The programme will be based around the experiences of 100 people who suffer from unsettled sleep patterns. Viewers will be invited to press the red button on their remote control to take part in a survey that will help them identify their sleep profile. The questionnaire will point them towards possible solutions to particular problems.</p><p></p><p>UK Sci-Fi Channel signs up sponsorship deal</p><p></p><p>The UK Sci-Fi Channel has signed up its first movie sponsorship for a TV series by signing Fox's forthcoming Elektra movie to sponsor James Cameron's prime time series Dark Angel. The deal marks the first time that a Fox movie has sponsored a TV series. The agreement provides Elektra with a series of promotional trails, Dark Angel sponsorship bumpers and both on-air and online content and promotions. </p><p></p><p>Military History Channel launches in US</p><p></p><p>A&E Networks, the broadcaster that runs the History Channel in the US, is to launch a new channel called The Military History Channel this Spring. Programming is to include documentary specials and series on military–themed subjects such as the history of warfare featuring famous and obscure battles. If successful, the channel could well cross the Atlantic and launch in Europe next year.</p><p></p><p>Eurosport News shuts as Eurosport 2 starts</p><p></p><p>Eurosport News closed down on Monday (January 10) and was replaced by a brand new sports channel called Eurosport 2. The new station shows additional coverage of sports events that are not covered on Eurosport's main channel in addition to regular sports news bulletins throughout the day. Eurosport is on Sky Digital channel 410 while Eurosport 2 is on channel 411. </p><p></p><p>Two new free-to-air film channels on Sky</p><p></p><p>The company that runs shopping channels Bid-Up TV and Price-Drop TV is planning to launch two new free-to-air film channels on Sky Digital. Called 'Real-Movies.tv' and 'Movies On 333', they will fully launch this summer. It's reported that the channels will be a low-cost venture, with an investment of under £3m. "These will be free movie channels aimed at specific demographics and will initially be broadcast on Sky, but we hope to be on other platforms in the future," said spokesman Ashley Faull. Real-Movies.tv will be female orientated, with an emphasis on true stories, while Movies On 333 will focus on Westerns, niche films and possibly British short films.</p><p></p><p>Sky Travel to broadcast '24' seasonal debut </p><p></p><p>Sky has decided to broadcast the first new episode of crime drama series 24 on Sky Travel so that viewers on Freeview can see it. Season four opens with a special two-hour episode starting at 9pm on January 30. "The exhibition on Sky Travel gives a wider audience an opportunity to enjoy two hours of amazing television," a Sky spokesman said. He added: "We think that many Sky Travel viewers without access to Sky One will value the opportunity to watch such a great example of the channel's premium US drama offering." </p><p></p><p>Discovery starts three new UK channels</p><p></p><p>Discovery Europe has confirmed that it is to launch three new lifestyle channels in the UK this year. Discovery Travel & Living will replace Discovery Travel & Adventure from February 1 and will focus on design, style, architecture, food and travel. The two other newcomes include Discovery Real Time and Discovery Home & Health, which will launch later in 2005 and target men and women respectively. To support next month's launch of Discovery Travel & Living, the broadcaster has bought a range of new programmes. Spokesman David Abraham said: "Discovery Lifestyle Networks is about delivering quality lifestyle programming that provides entertainment, escapism and inspiration in the comfort of your own home." </p><p></p><p>ITV complains to OFCOM about Sky charges</p><p></p><p>ITV has made a formal complaint to government regulators about the charges which Sky wants to impose on it for enabling satellite TV viewers to receive the correct regional version of the channel. ITV claims in a statement to OFCOM that Sky's proposed charges are: "unfair, unreasonable and unduly discriminatory and therefore in breach of Sky's obligations under EU and UK law." The complaint comes after the two broadcasters failed to reach an agreement regarding ITV's new contract with Sky, which was supposed to have been renewed in November. A two-month stay of execution was granted but talks reached a stalemate and ITV has since decided that it has no option but to have Sky investigated. ITV wants at least £13m slashed off its annual £17m a year bill for Sky's services to encrypt and regionalise its channel. </p><p></p><p>Tsunami red button donations top £1m</p><p></p><p>Tsunami relief donations via Sky News, Channel 4 and The Community Channel's red button services are expected to top £1m. Some 60,000 people have already given in this way. Sinead Hughes, interactive TV editor at The Community Channel, whose red button donations service was set up within days on Sky Interactive, said: “The technology's really proved its worth. It's a perfect example of what can be achieved once we've established a connection with other organisations.” </p><p></p><p>Sky to launch ad-free TV viewing service</p><p></p><p>Sky has reportedly patented a new technology that allows viewers to record programmes without any ad breaks. While the Sky + personal video recorder allows users to skip through advertisements, even when played at 30 times normal speed, the ads can still be seen by viewers. Sky hopes to offer a service that allows viewers much greater control. One patent, filed in August 2000, allows viewers to "interrupt the recording of programmes so as not to record adverts".
