Mid week I started hearing a high pitched whine just on the edge of hearing. It turned out it was my Netgear NASbox complaining at one of the hard drives (2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB capacity fitted).

Once I turned the box off it it was very reluctant to restart and one drive started making some horrible clicking noises. Research shows this is a common problem with the Seagate Barracuda drives. (Google "Seagate click of death" for the sorry saga of these drives!)

These drives are a month less than 3 years old so are not exactly ancient- I was lucky - the second drive mirrors the first so I still have all my data intact. Amazon supplied a couple of WD Red 1TB drives in 36 hours at a decent price and the box is currently resynching up the replacement drive. Once its finished I'll replace the second Barracuda as well and find a none critical use for it.

So if you have any important data on Seagate Barracudas 7200.xx drives I strongly advise you get it backed up asap - I had no warning of the failure of this drive, and this seems to be the normal thing when these go bad from the complaints across the t'internet.

I had a WD that expired in its infancy.
 
Any drive can fail unexpectedly. These Barracudas have an appalling reliability record though once you start reading up about them.....
 
The first time I bought a Seagate drive was for an AT PC. It was 1GB and I paid the earth for.
After a month it died on me.
I have never bought another Seagate drive ever since. The WD seems to be a lot more reliable till now.
 
Seagates have the reputation

Western Digital hides as much as they can to keep their reputation.
 
Seagate - Well there's ya problem!! Wouldn't trust them to store compost... :-rofl2
 
Yep, terrible drives. I've been lucky not to have had any failures. My NAS is running 4x 3TB WD Red drives and have been fine for a while now. These are especially suited for NAS use have decent rep. Avoid WD green though...
