Sealing connections

My Satellite Setup
Up and running -> FR Penta 85 dish, TM-02 twin LNB, TM-2300 motor, TM-5200D receiver
My Location
Meath, Ireland
Ok guys, everything is ordered and on the way. The last thing I need is cable, connectors and a few cable ties which I'm going to pick up in town later. I was then thinking how Im going to seal the external connectors and connections. What is the best method of sealing the F connectors to the cable. I seen somewhere along the way glue coated heat shrink but think I would struggle to find this in my town. What method do you guys use?

I was also going to pick up a tube of silicon for sealing around the motor and lnb connections...will this be sufficient?

Self-amalgamating tape or a rubber boot.

Dont want to appear stupid but probably will. Self alamgamating tape...what is this? Electricians tape?

Also what would I do with the rubber boot.

I know Im digging a hole here but wth...All typos are correct at time of writing :)

Im trying to keep everting white as possible to match in with chimney. Where would I pick up a pair of white wellies :confused:
 
Self-amalagamating tape is the very devil to remove if you ever wish (or need) to.

I use the little black wellies which you can get easily from fleabay etc. Never seen white ones, though.

They just slip snugly over the unterminated cable, then you fit the Effing Plug and slip the end of the boot over the plug body.

Perfectly adequate.

Im not getting it:confused:do I not need glue or silicon to stick it on?

I have a strip of pvc in the garage which came with my fishing waders...maybe this might be of some use?

or be fancy and fit some of them snap n seal compression fit, f connections, i love em got them on all my cables :)

I believe cablecon are bringing some out that dont need a compression tool:)

even better, are the cablecon ones good quality as i only have thomas n betts ones here.

but saying that the compression fit ones are probably over the top, unless you fit systems where they are ideal to create a professional looking install

If the LNB you are using has a pull down connector cover (many of them do now), then as long as the "F" connectors are a snug fit on the cable and are nipped up tightly, they should be fine without any supplementary weatherproofing..
 
Cant see the back of the cablecon connectors but guess they are waterproof.

Well I picked up some screw fit F connectors and guy in shop said normal electricians tape would do the job. They are a tight fit when putting onto the cable. The Lnb is a TM and has no cover. Im just going to seal as best I can. Still cant see how I would fit a piece of rubber into it tho!

I got it all setup this evening but no signal from Atlantic Bird 3. I tried the GAAPS method but didnt work for me. I was using needle and styrofoam as compass cause my Sat finder kit hasnt arrived. Might have another try tomorrow
 
the electrican tape is no good, use the Self-amalgamating tape to make the connection waterproof as it bonds to itself to like rubberise which is 100% waterproof

with those pull down rain cover just put some tape around the bottom of the f connection no need for any around the screw part.

have you been on dishpointer.com, as this will show your house on google earth and then give you the direction of satellites, this will help you to find 5west as that will be an easy catch on the large dish as it is a strong signal

Cabelcon compression F type has an O-ring seal.

With the rubber boot, you place it over the cable first, fit the f plug and then slide the boot over the connector. Self amalgamating tape should be used if no boot.

yes...great site.

Im still a little confused. Reading the Technomate manuals for motor and receiver is very confusing. Can someone please confirm these setup steps...

Im 53N 6.6W
Everything in place, plugged in, turned on
I point dish magnetic south with 53 degree elevation settings according to motor chart
Turn on receiver and go to Atlantic Bird 3 @ 5w - No Signal
I manually move motor 1.6 degree east and check receiver for signal - No signal
I loosen pole mount bolts on dish and swing dish side to side E/W looking for signal - Still no signal!!!

All the time TM 5200 receiver is telling me Quality 98% Signal 19-20%

Am I doing it right?
Any ideas?

Any ideas?

1. The Motor body has a scale on either side: One is "Elevation" and the other is "Latitude"

Set the Motor body to 53 on the "Latitude" scale

2. Now ignore the Motor and look at the Dish's own Elevation bracket: Set this to somewhere around 24 (At which point the Dish face will look nigh on vertical)

3. Enter your USALS coordinates into your Receiver ie Lat 53.00 and Long either 6.6W or -6.6 (depends upon Receiver)

4. Select AB3 at 5W

5. Peak for best Quality using small movements of Dish (not Motor) Elevation and by moving the entire Motor/Dish assembly around the pole

Your LNB should be set to zero skew (ie Top Dead Centre with Dish at "Zero")

That's about it.

Dish elevation is set to 22.4 according to motor manual

Motor is TM 2300 and not USALS compatible I think. I guess its same using Diseq 1.2...dont recall seeing where I should enter co-ords

goin to give it another try now...

TM2300 is USALS compatible, I assure you! It's a Moteck clone and they are all USALS capable.

(Sometimes stated as DiSEqC 1.3)

If you really want to use DiSEqC 1.2, then the Rx doesn't need to know your Lat/Long as you find and store (as you are currently doing).
 
One more thing before I go watch Grand Prix Free Practice - Dish Elevation 22.4 is fine, as would 24 be. The theoretical value is just a starting point and there is little point in getting to precise about it as you need to physically align in Elevation anyway, to accommodate small cumulative errors in the physical installation.

With the Clarke Belt 24,000 miles oop in space, a miss is as good as many, many miles!
