I am following this thread with interest as I will be doing my first installation this weekend (weather permitting) with a TM2300 and TM5400.

Now I am STRICTLY a newbie, but should you not be pointing dish to TRUE south and not magnetic south? I am sure the experts on here will correct me if I'm wrong!

I have same dish and motor as you Dave. Good luck with reading the manual. Point 7 in motor manual says you can setup dish using GAAPS method which doesnt need true south alignment. As I said earlier I dont have a compass or meter as yet and was trying to line in using home made compass which probably isnt helping.

I will let you know how I get on...just need a while to get head together after pub last nite

If you really want to use DiSEqC 1.2, then the Rx doesn't need to know your Lat/Long as you find and store (as you are currently doing).

Ok, TM2300 motor manual says Diseqc 1.2 & 1.3 compatible while TM 5200D Rx says Diseqc 1.2 & USALS

So if I run the motor as USALS all should be ok!

Indeed - all you need to do is find out which Menu in the Technomate Receiver has the Lat/Long entry boxes: I don't have a TM Rx myself, but I feel sure there must be a "lurker" who can help if needed.

And the benefit of USALS is not having to worry about Magnetic this, True that, blah blah blah!!

Quality 19-20% always no matter what way I move the dish.

Ive reread this thread and only thing left I can think is the LNB or LNB holder.

I had to use a piece of hose pipe to make LNB fit in holder and am now thinking that its not lined up properly. Would this make a big difference if it was not dead centre on dish?
 
The high Signal Strength reading merely indicates (at this stage) that the other end of the cable from the Rx is actually properly terminated somewhere.

Are you using a needle meter at the LNB end? If so, a common problem is that the provided short cable stub from the meter to the LNB is very flimsy and often either fails to make contact or simply breaks.

Best thing to do is make one up yourself, with proper cable and an Effing Plug at each end.

Do Post a few pics, as these often help in diagnosis - especially if you've made a "howler" !!!
 
I dont have a meter yet. Ordered of ebay last week with compass as sat finder kit and still waiting for it to arrive! Was getting somebody to watch the Quality bar on the tv while I adjusted dish but nothing changed.

The LNB didnt fit the holder properly so I use a piece of hose pipe to get a tight fit. Now Im thinking its not lined up right. I'll try get a few snaps on my phone
 
have you got a little tv outside with the receiver to help you out ?

if the tm5200 has a similar menu layout to my tm1500 the usals entry screen will be under installation, motorised setting

then scroll down to motor and select usals and then you will see a place to enter the position which i think you said is 53 north and 6.6west.

then select atlantic bird 5west and go to that position.

you should have got an adapter with the dish if the lnb is smaller than 40mm
 
No, I dont have a portable tv and dont want to risk bringing lcd up on the roof with me :0 I have laptop but that would probably be to much messing around trying to get software installed for it to work

Ive read all setup tutorials twice over and thought I had it sussed

The lnb holder came with adapters but none fit right. Gonna post few pics see if that helps

Ignore GAAPS method, that's to do with DiSEqC 1.2 not req.
The LNb should fit into it's holder assuming you have the additional adaptor collar that sits inside to effectively give you a 40mm fitting for a standard LNb.

Also make sure you have an active transponder listed on 5W.
 
Hi Again,

some of you already know from my other thread that Im having tuning problems with my new setup.

I have no sat finder kit and trying to tune in blindly which is not working. So I was thinking is it possible to connect the S Video on a laptop to the receiver so I have a screen to look at when adjusting the dish?
 
Portable TV, length of coax from Rf out of receiver and a long extension lead should do easily enough LoMax.

still curious to know if a laptop can recieve video in thru the S video socket
 
The Laptop won't. Have never seen one that does. Simple USB video capture dongles are available on the like of Ebay very cheap.
 
well I borrowed portable tv and compass so in between showers managed to get setup on roof. I disconnected the motor and ran the cable direct from LNB to Rx. Set Rx to AB3 5W and pointed dish in same direction. Still the same result Quality 98% - Signal 19-20%! Removed the cable and paired back to get extra lenght on inner core to make sure connection was been made and refitted...still no change!

Noticed that when I removed cable from LNB the Quality level started bouncing up and down ramdomly but the Signal level still remained at 19-20%

I took of LNB from holder and tried moving in and out from dish but made no difference and ofc moved dish in every direction!

Im now starting to think that there is a fault somewhere in the LNB or Rx.

One other thing I noticed was when the compass is placed near the dish it gives a false reading...like the dish itself has it own magnetic field which effects the compass.

Another thing is the dish is setup on the aerial mast pole but dont think the aerial would interfere with satellite signal?

Well apart from that I cant think of anything else. Is there any way of checking the LNB is working with a multimeter like a resistance test without opening otherwise warranty is void?


ohh one more thing...when talking about manual adjustment to a dish for better signal are we talking about finite 0.01 degrees or is it a little more tolerent. i.e. I have 100% signal from a satellite and adjust the dish by 1 degree would I lose the signal completely?
 
As the dish is metal it will interfere with the compass.
Is your ariel mast up to the job of supporting the weight of your dish and motor in the wind ? Normally they aren't so something to watch out for.
You do have to be quite accurate with the dish allignment, more so with the weaker sats.
Do you know anyone with a sky dish that you could plug the reciever into? that would atleast test the reciever.
It can take a bit af patience, It took me ages to get a signal on the first dish I setup. You could try copying the nearest sky dish and try for a signal on 28e (i'm assuming your in the UK) that would be the easiest catch to make sure it all works.

You need the receiver to drive to a calculated 5W position first before alignment.

Do you have a line of sight issue?
