Sealing connections

how strong a signal is #Thor# AB3 5w? should I pick another satellite to start with

Im at 6.6 west so #Thor# AB3 is only 1.6E from me...thought i could just manually move east and hopefully pick it up. There are trees in line of sight to thor but approx 100m away. I checked it on dishfinder.com which recommended they should be no more that 55m above my location so Im guessing Im ok on that one

are LNB's known to be faulty sometimes? I was thinking to put onto a sky dish...would this work or would I need Rx to go with it?
 
Thor is at 1W, you need to look for Atlantic bird 5W. :)

This signal is quite strong.

Sorry, Atlantic Bird is what i meant. Dont know why Ive been calling it Thor. Anyhow it has been 5W that I have been trying to get.
 
Ok, I plugged phone into pc and it worked straight away whereas other night I was installing/uninstalling/updating drivers and nothing worked. Anyhow here are some pics of the setup so far...whats the bet I go out plug everthing in and it works straight away :toke:

How many adapters did you get with the Penta for the LNB holder, I've never found a problem with clamping LNBs, fitting two of the 40mm segments should allow you to attach it properly.

Change the transponder to 11591 V 20000 2/3, as the one you list doesn't exist according to Lyngsat, which would of course explain why you cannot obtain a lock.
 
Rolfw you were right...had another look in boxes and found 2nd adapter for LNB holder...doh! Wish they would have supplied in white to match in with dish.

Anyway, Im almost there :)

Sat meter arrived in post this morning so I got setup to give it another bash. Connected up portable tv, Rx, meter on roof and headed for 5W. Still same result until I started flicking through the transponder settings. My signal levels just jumped up straight away and meter needle nearly jumped of the scale...yes!!!

Just as I started fine tuning with the meter it started raining so had to abandon but Im pretty confident Im almost there. Just hoping for break in the weather to get back out. At the mo Im picking up 70% signal from hotbird at 10E on motor so guess Im a few degrees out but hopefully can sort it.

Many thanks to all you guys for your help esp Tuvi, Sateman & Rolf. Credit to Sateman for first pointing out about the transponder settings which I failed to act on originally.

Ps...those Velux windows can come in handy sometimes... there was a reading on meter but probably hanging onto dish while taking snap

But your Post sounds like a closing speech - I very much hope you'll keep on reporting news of your successes as you achieve them! :)

As regards getting Hotbird Channels on 10E, don't forget that Hotbird is very strong whereas 10E isn't: You'll find that you are probably somewhat less than the 3 degrees error that it might seem you have. I'd lay odds you're only about half a degree out.

And you'll know if you've gone to far t'other way as Hottie can also swamp 16E for Dishes without very narrow Beamwidth (Beamwidth generally decreases with size, so a large Dish needs to be much more accurate. The downside is that smaller Dishes have trouble rejecting strong adjacent Satellites).

I have no experience of the Penta in this respect, though.

Ahh only closing speech to this thread...Still got a lot to learn so I will be droping in with more noob Q's if you guys dont mind and learning of other threads also :)

BTW what is the transponder. Is it the frequency range that the LNB is working on?

More or less.

A Transponder physically consists of some electronics that receives the Uplink signal then retransmits it using a Travelling Wave Tube.

Each Transponder is about 20+ MHz wide and can "relay" several Channels (how many depends upon the Modulation method, Symbol Rate, FEC etc - but forget that for now and concentrate on actually watching some Telly!).

Every "Bird" has a fair number of Transponders and the entire Band they use (Part of what is called Ku Band) is split into two halves for Domestic Satellite purposes: Low Band and High Band. Those Bands are converted by your LNB into a range (Called L Band) that your Receiver can actually cope with.

Hence Low Noise Blockdownconverter ...........

Your Receiver tells the LNB which Band to select (and also splits both bands further into Horizontal and Vertical Polarisation).

There's more .... much more. But a little and often might be the best way!

I agree with your 'little and often' advice, Tivu. My knowledge is growing daily as I follow informative threads such as this one started by LoMax..........my thanks to both of you and all other contributors to such threads.
