is there anyway i can get it cheaper?
this weekend french TV comes to my parents house curtousy of an 80cm dish + analogue receiver and i can imagine its going to be B&W for them...

Don't bank on it. My portable has inbuilt secam capability but it's not advertised anywhere on the set. Try it out first (and check the TV settings) before you go buying transcoders.

I got one off ebay by the way for a lot less than £100.
 
Or get an old analogue Echostar - most of them give colour pics no problem :)
 
Re TVs that can understand Secam. You will tend to find really top of the range TVs do and also the not so top of the range TVs if they are from a French company (Thompson usually).
