I bought a selfsat h30d plastic square dish a few weeks ago and mounted it on a tripod in the back garden. Trying to get it to work is driving me crazy, I have it set to the correct skew elevation and azimuth and still can't get anything out of it. My signal meter is showing 4% wherever I point it. I have even used dishpointer on my iphone without any success.

Can anyone tell me where i'm going wrong.

Please Post up some pics.

Not familiar with that dish, but if the LNB is`"offset" you might have mistakenly set the dish face to the required elevation figure rather than accounting for any offset.
 
I'll pop up some pics tomorrow when it is a bit brighter. The Selfsat dish is more commonly known as a 'squish' dish. it is a plastic square dish with the lnb built into it.

PS: Very jealous of your Broadband speed .......... you are only a few miles away as the fly crows and my speed rarely gets above 750Kbps!!!
 
It will need to be angled back much further than a "conventional dish" as it doesnt have the ~25 degree offset on it from an lnb arm.

I had taken the elevation. skew and azimuth readings from the instruction book that came with the dish from the closest city to me which is Newcastle Upon Tyne.
It is proving to be a nightmare as you cant see the lnb to match anything up. I have a fixed dish set to 28E but bought this one to get hotbird, how I wished now that I had now gone for the more conventional type.

The elevation of the antenna will be set like a prime focus dish, with that, the angle of the antenna face can be set to the elevation of the satellite, and it should pick up a signal once the azimuth was correct. Some spirit levels have a an adjustment for obtaining any angle, setting the dish face with something like that should get you up and running.
 
Problem Solved.I managed to get a lock eventually to hotbird after a little bit of tinkering. I also noticed that that ground I put the tripod on was not completely level so I moved it onto level ground.Many thanks to those who replied.jb000
