Server Advice - DM800 vs Linux PC

DM500, DM800, Quad Core with 4GB RAM

So my current setup is a DM800 with a Smargo connected via USB...ECM times average around 0.145 which isn't too bad. I've just invested in a powered USB hub as there are reports of this helping to lower ECM times.

I've currently got 5 clients connecting to my server but would like to up it to nearer 8-10 but I'm not sure if the DM800 could handle it. I've read numerous reports from people saying DM800's can only handle around 8 clients but then others are saying they have upwards of 20...

One thing I have noticed is that if I'm watching a HD channel then ECM rises to around 0.17x for my clients presumably due to the increased processor power needed to handle a HD channel...

So here lies the question...

Is a DM800 good enough to handle 10 clients or should I be looking to move to a Linux PC setup and if so what kinda specs i.e 1.6Ghz 1GB RAM????

Its hard to say really, if all your clients connect at the same time then 8 - 10 is going to give your DM800 a headache, and will probably interupt your veiwing as well.

I have 7 clients, but never ever seen more than 3 online together, but I suppose they could all demand anytime

I use an Ubuntu which serves out the required shares, its good fun getting one up and running, but obviously you have the expense of the machine and its something else to go wrong, and it kicks out heat and uses electric.

Another advantage of having an Ubuntu is you can take your DM800 offline to fiddle about, without disrupting your Clients if they are served via the Ubuntu.
 
is there any method at the moment that allows the user to identify that his/her dm800 (or any other dreambox) is struggling with supplying the necessary responses to client systems other than the obvious visible effect of channels breaking up a bit. would be a neat plugin. maybe its already there. if so am unaware of its existance
