Are SES now using 5/6 FEC for 11052H? as DR HD shows 8.7-8.9db, and no lock. And linux DVB-S2 card shows FEC 5/6 in updateDVB software.

11052H is still booming in here - currently at ~17dB (84%) on the TM5402.

C'mon ITV bump it the fec up even higher - then move all the DVB-S2 tp's over to it :D

Still having problems here with 11053 H ( or 11052 H if you prefer )

Before the rain hit earlier, adjusted the skew on the LH110 using 10994 H and managed to get BBC HD Scotland back with no pixelation. This also appeared to improve 11053 H by a small amount, but now with low clouds and slight to moderate rain have lost signal for most of the day.

Could that lovely strong data txp on 11008 V affect 11053 H, I would have thought it was too far away?

Just tried a quick scan using 5/6 fec, still nothing. Will check 1.8 and advise

Could they theoretically use no FEC? How big would UK dishes need to be?

No - there has to be some correction built into the signal to repair transmission errors.

With the huge signal levels on the UK spots in the UK fec 7/8 should be achievable pretty easily, possibly a bit more. Good news for the tv companies as each bump up gives a tp more bandwidth to play with (& no doubt squeeze more channels in rather than improving the picture quality) But bad news for expats on the margins!

GI HD has lost 11053 H as well, can see a signal level, but no " program ", running blind scan no on GI box, but not sure how good it is. ( Did find some new BBC 3 and 4 channels when running network scan )

Blind scan using GI HD Mini has not detected any signal on 11053 H. Box does not specify fec on any channel, but normally sees anything out there, encrypted or not. Will try using VU+ on 110 later, after Mrs Brian has watched this evenings delights! If that fails will switch VU+ back to 1.8 Fam for proper check at a later date.

Did complete reset to default and re-scanned GI Mini HD connected to 1.8 Fam. Can now see ch-20735 ( I think it said ) with sig quality at 54%, but still breaks up! Normally even on HD channels the GI is ok on 4% quality or above! Could be due to the fec change as it had no problem on 3/4.

Will try with VU+ on LH110 in a moment or two, if no good will try VU on 1.8 tomorrow or Sat

VU+ on LH110 has lost ses demo on 11464 H and most HD channels at moment, BBC 1 South is only recording 7.8dB at mo, normally 8.6 - 9 dB, so assume weather is causing problems.

Just going outside to lock-up, so will check

Just checked, heavy cloud and raining, so any attempt to take measurement will be pointless for now

SES Demo just came back up, reading 9.1dB, am going to blind scan VU+ and see if it picks up 11053 H. Cannot manual scan due to software problem I´m trying to resolve

Blind scan cannot see 11054 H fec 5/6 at the moment, will try mañana

In Finland we have two satellite operators using different FECs but from satellites with similar power levels.

Canal Digital on Thor 1W use FEC 7/8 for quite a few DVB-S transponders and the official Triax dishes for Canal Digital tend to be 60cm minimum in southern Finland and 85cm+ in the north. A while ago the Finnish equivalent to BBC/ITV/Ch4 (YLE/MTV3/Nelonen) moved to a DVB-S2 transponder and changed their FEC to 3/4 so it was a bit easier to receive and this was actually one of the positive features mentioned in the letter to subscribers, along with a warning that old Canal Digital SD receivers would no longer work...

On the other hand Viasat on Astra 4A 5E uses more conventional FEC 3/4 for most transponders and the dishes in southern Finland are like solid grey versions of a Sky zone 1 dish (about 45cm, not sure on the make) and look tiny in comparison. I assume part of the reason why they can get away with smaller dishes is due to the more robust FEC.

Both satellites are, in theory, outputting at similar strength (about 51-52dBW) , which is also what SES claim Astra 2 satellites output over the UK but as we know the power levels have gone up with the new generation of satellites.

Id love to know what the ACTUAL dBW levels are now - from the signals Im getting here on the UK spots Id guess it was nearer 60.
