Just wondered why are satellites referred too as female gender?

A bit like ships?....I think they are invariably referred to as female....
 
You can use the engineering term "Hummer" for a satellite as it uses electricity, if it does not use any form of power you can use "Puppy".

Examples:

"Lets plug this hummer in", "Wears that hummer at?","What's on that hummer?"

or

"What does that puppy do?"

Of coarse if you let the smoke out of a hummer it becomes a puppy automatically.
 
...and I was so enthused by the thread title, thinking it'd be something like "look at the size of my mounting pole", or "check the extent of his actuator"...
 
Ships, steam locomotives, and various other bits of heavy engineering have traditionally been called "she" Its probably stuck from that engineering tradition..

After all - and there's no denying being a well-posted member on this forum - we do have a keen interested in the "Birds" (another s_x'ism?) up there...
 
At least they don't name satellites like the growler for people in England know what i mean. Talking about giving them female names.
