66cm dish and Grundig freesat HD + box

I have put up a dish, 66 cms and cabled back to the Grundig box.

At no point with my attempts at alignment and scanning frequencies have I moved from ZERO.

Even with the cable disconnected I get ZERO, so what use a 66 cms dish?

I connect a basic signal strength meter in line, it gets a green LED at the dish end, suggesting that the wiring is intact.

SO what if anything can be done to prove the LNB is working, albeit with reduced signal strength due to mis-alignment by me.

Please start me off...
 
You need to check your connections, and perhaps you could upload a couple of photos of the dish and relate your alignment procedure. Hopefully then we can help you to achieve reception, as a 66cm dish should give you a very good signal from Astra 28.2.

I seem to remember a Grundig HD box which showed no signal (of which there was plenty) until it had carried out a software update.

Alignment is by using the google mapping from satfinder, coupled with using a compass and looking at the general direction of a nearby dish.

This I hoped gave me the East of South figure I wanted.

I am guessing at the -13 degrees for the LNB.

But even so with all figures dased on Stratford on Avon, and Google values I should get a percentage above zero.

The software update seems like a catch 22, because I am not going to get that unless I get a signal,and I cant get......

So am I right in thinking that I cant go any further forward?

The chances of me taking a picture that is in any way beneficial to any body, and uploading it are pretty much NIL.
 
Well you could perhaps beg a few minutes use of a neighbour's "Sky" dish to do the update and check out your box.

Compass and "general direction of a nearby dish" isn't good enough, I'm afraid, and some empirical trail and error will almost certainly be required to locate the correct position.

With major Satellite positions more or less at 3 degree intervals, it is very easy indeed to find the wrong Satellite.

Probably the most common mistake for a relative newcomer is hitting 19.2E instead.

What's the problem with pic? It's can be helpful, and isn't onerous.

I get ZERO at all times.

If I could hit any satellite signal I would be happy.

I think my next step is to buy another decoder box, HUMAX probably and hope it can see a signal.

Not knowing what a signal looks like, IE: is it something that would register as Millivolts on a DMM?

Or another LNB, or both box and LNB until I get something other than Zero.

So I will try a few things and perhaps be able to report something positive next week.
 
Rather than buy another receiver, why not invest a few quid on a cheapo satellite finder, it will give you an audio or visual indication when you find a satellite, online satfinder tools are only a guide to direction.

No matter how bad, a couple of photos of the dish would probably help, also what make is the LNB?

PS, Is the dish face near vertical?
 
I'm having the same issue, sorry to butt in. Used to have a switch, to switch between my 60cm hotbird fixed dish and my sky dish. Took the 60cm one down to install a motor and know I can't get a signal from anywhere using either my receiver or Satellite finder but the sky dish is working fine. Have I broke the LNB? I'll try it on the minidish tomorrow to check just in case. Anyone got a clue?

Well today, at 13:46 I bought a SAGEM box from Argos, having returned the GRUNDIG, and it is now 14:54
and I have some FREESAT channels.

Thank you for the help, it would seem your surmise about an update being needed as hitting the mark.

Also it has restored my faith in my installation abilities. I have 67 -68 % strength and 100% quality and I am not gonna tweak for some time to come.

I have some fiddling to do with the Sagem to set it up for recording or whatever as I only have a single input at present.
 
Well done, it is a nice feeling when you get some channels, be careful you don't get the bug :)
