Enjoying a day at the races yesterday, I came back with an empty wallet and a snap of the SISLink van.

I assume the SIS dish is the uplink to the inclined orbit sat at 20W, and the Oyster dish is pointed at 28E to receive the ATR channel.

The interesting thing though is the static dish on the bookie's building on the far right, which should be set on 5E for the SIS bookies' channels, but appears to be pointed to 20W, the same as the SIS dish on the van.

Perhaps my sense of direction is amiss :-doh!

SIS have used the 20W wobbly sat for some of their stuff since 2F3 went wandering off to the great space graveyard.

Now - wheres the pic?

It won't be an LNB. It'll be a BUC (Block up-convertor) for transmitting the uplink.

I said that in 2000. No need to repeat myself.

The dish on the building is the old SIS dish set on 27.w.
Should have been removed a few years ago when they changed to 5E.

Hi Llew and everyone else... I'm quite lucky to live next door to a football stadium as their media compound is below my living room window. This picture is from a match a few weeks ago when Sky were televising using a truck from Scanners Outside Broadcast... which woke me up when it and about forty crew arrived at 4.30am! BT bring their small scanner some weekends, it's like a small SIS truck with a 1.5m dish on, though how they get a signal out when in the shadow of the zinc roof of Staples??? Other times they're even less sophisticated... a Transit van with a Betacam SP recorder and a large cable-reel that they plug into a wall box on the side wall of the stadium!

Whilst we're at it does anyone know where the comms (return talkback from base and so on) on an OB is carried, is it on a seperate transponder or a very low bandwidth audio channel multiplexed into the main feed... i.e. with the right kit is it possible to break it out an listen to it??? Am I trying to run before I can walk???

Cheers,
Tom

If it's one of the larger stadia with limited 'line of sight' for the dish, they'll have fibre access. This may well account for the lack of a dish-mounted vehicle in your picture.

Used to be able to find talkback channels on the old analogue feeds, they'll be on separate APIDS with digital, haven't checked lately though.
