Sky abroad in Cyprus

Hi there,

I have a couple of questions regarding watching Sky abroad that I was hoping you could help me with.

My fiancee is Cypriot and her family currently live in Larnaca. They wanted to know if we could get a Sky Multiroom subscription here in the UK, and send them over one of our new cards. So effectively with the Sky multiroom subuscription we'll be using one of the cards for our Sky+ box here in the UK and her family will be using the other card with their existing standard Sky box in Larnaca.

Would this setup work? Could I just send them over the new card and they could put it into their Sky box without any issues? Does the card need to be paired to a specific box?

They used to be able to watch Sky, so I know they have the appropriate dishes / signal reception etc.

Are there any other implications / issues that I should be aware of?

Many thanks in advance.

No - multiroom requires both receivers to be connected to the SAME operational phone line at all times..

This is actively policed and if the callbacks fail two or three times (as they would with one box in Larnaca!) you get billed for two complete subs (backdated of course)

They will have to set up their own independant subscription.

Oh, well that is annoying!

What would happen if I wanted Sky Multiroom and wanted the second box to be in a room that did not have a phone line? Would they not allow that?

Thanks for the reply. Excusing my ignorance as I have personally never subscribed to Sky, it seems really bizzare to expect every room that will have a sky box to have a phone line installed. Anyway, if that is they way they do things then so be it.

How would an individual subscription work then, in order for her family to watch Sky in Cyprus? I am happy for them to have the subscription registered here and they take the card to Cyprus. Doesn't the Sky box need to be plugged in to a phone line as well then?

Thanks for your help so far.

It's an anti-fraud measure: Otherwise, there is nothing to prevent the unscrupulous from "lending" a subsidised Card to family or friend.

They will tell you yes (for the first twelve months), but in practice no.

Multiroom , on the other hand, is a lifetime requirement.

$ly installers carry a roll of telephone wire and plugs to make up extensions if required!

Thanks for the responses.

I just spoke with my fiancee's dad... basically they already have a Sky subscription registered to another UK address. That address is soon no longer going to be available, so he was thinking of transfering the subscription to our current address. Initially he suggested the multiroom option so that we could make the most of his Sky World subscription - but it looks like this is not a viable option. Another option could be to pay £5 /mnth extra and get a Sky Player subscription - which will let us watch some channels online, whilst the dad keeps his current subscription.

Are there any implications with him changing the address to our property? Will a new contract need to be signed, and hence will a new card need to be paired up to a box in this house (with the box being hooked up to a phone line?).

Thanks for your help with all this - I'm a total newbie when it comes to Sky :)

No, a simple change of address notification will suffice.

All of my customers that subscribe to sky pay the full price anyway, so if it's easy to have multiroom installed, have it installed ,disconnect, bring to cyprus and pay what they pay,if that is the only setback of being caught out. After all,all sky want is your money.

If the new address is in a different terrestrial TV area then 101 and 103 will change to the relevent regional variation. 102 will only change if you move country. 104 and and 105 change almost imperceptibly in that some of the adverts are slightly different, the programming is the same.

That's reassuring to know he can switch addresses and not have a problem :)

One final question, I guess - her dad has the old Sky card... so when he rings to change address he'll be asking for the new card. Will they just send it out and it will work fine in his existing Sky box, or will we need to do something to pair the two up?

Thanks again

I have had another thought...

What would happen if I took out a Multiroom subscription, receive the two new cards, send one off to Cyprus, keep one for myself and then ring up to say that I broke one of the cards and need a new one sent out.

Then if I got a new replacement card, I would legitimately have both boxes connected up on the same line, whilst her dad has the third active card in his box in Cyprus.

Would that work?

The "broken" Card will be killed.

BSkyB are grandmasters at these games ..................

I can imagine lol.

How is the card 'killed'? If it is plugged into a box which is not connected to a phone line, how do they destroy the card?

Because all activations, permission changes etc are done via Satellite, not by telephone. Many people (apart from Multiroom!!) don't have any phone line connected.

And they go to "sleep" periodically anyway unless they receive a periodic "stay alive" signal to keep them awake. The latter cause headaches for those who unplug boxes before long holidays etc.

So even if the card can't be properly de-activated for example if it isn't kept in a Digibox, it will eventually die of its own accord.

As I say, BSkyB are grandmasters ...............

Ah, ok. I never realised that it was more than just TV signals that were communicated through the Sky satellite network.

Thanks for your advice - I'll stick to a single box subscription and send across the card

There IS a possibility but it's longwinded and probably not what you wanted.

This is all theoretical of course. If the broken card is kept in a drawer then it won't receive the kill signal. It won't receive the stayalive signal also but that's irrelevant if it's not being used! After a certain period of time (maybe 6 months, possibly longer, unlikely to be less) it might have missed all the kill signals and be safe to plug into a box where it will receive a stayalive signal after a day or two.

The problem is all that you have at the end of this is an FTV card as the subscription part will have long expired.

And who's to say that perhaps evry year or so $ly don't run through all of their kill signals again just to catch out people like you!

Grandmasters, you know...

Hi all - apologies if rehashing the same question here however wanted to confirm the situation with the phone line if taking my sky+ box (non multiroom) to cyprus...from above it appears that its not required, is that correct? Also if my box is switched off say for a few months while the move happens and the required dish gets installed, can this cause an issue?

Thanks

Magou
