The Sky HDTV initial channel line up will be:

Sky One HD
Sky Sports HD
Artsworld HD
Sky Box Office HD
two Sky Movies HD
National Geographic HD
Discovery HD
 
Well I've got the HD Ready gogglebox - but no money for Rupe and his offerings O-no O-no

Will you be able to get all the other channels on a HD sky box? That are not in HD?

Its not much use if you cant!:D

Yes you will be able to watch standard def progs on a HDTV receiver
 
Thats good. When digital first came out there was not that many channels on. I would love to get HDTV but its way to expensive. Ive seen TV sets for around £800 which is OK. But then to get sky on you have to pay even more for your box and the subscription. I don't think I will have HDTV for another 2 years. It should be cheaper by then.
 
Any word yet on what transponders will be used for H.D.

If it starts before 2C arrives at 28E, then it will have to be on one of the currently vacant ones. 11720H is back on testing at the moment so possibly that one - its been on and off every few weeks recently. This is just guesswork, no promises

If they wait for 2C to arrive, then they ahve a choice of frequencies.
 
I take it this is just the kick off and after some time more channels will be in H.D and more transponders used. Just wondering how long it will be before we in the back blocks of Wop-wop will be able to get it. Any idea of 2C's foot print?

Assuming its more or less the same as the footprint at 19E its pan west-European and the eastern block. According to the official maps

(down the bottom of the page), signal strengths start dropping of rapidly as you go south east from Albania.

Kingofsat list 1.5 - 2.5m dishes are not big enough for the east end of the med.

Other than the cost of the new equipment (and OK, so it's not cheap, but you can't expect Sky to keep everyone supplied with new kit until the end of time...) my understanding was that Sky would not charge any extra just because it was 'HD'.

Please, somebdy correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not really that up-to-date with Sky-related announcements...

Havent seen any definite announcements but there are rumours of a 10 quid a month premium at first. So you are looking at 50 quid a month subs for your HDTV pleasure.

Well if this is the case we will all be jumping up and down with joy here in the Canaries after all the rubbish we have to put up with related to the current 2d and North beams.

Is there any reason to suppose the 2C beam will remain the same when it moves? Is it official it will definitely be moving at all?
 
hardly compelling line-up, I say. Coupled with the new box, the price overhead and the fact that I use some Triax gizmo to insert the scart signal into my home tv cable network......this is one bandwagon I won't be riding on for some time :)
 
I don't want to nit-pick (I say that, I do actually, but I'm just being sensible), but when skyHD is launched, won't sky do something they've done twice before???

If you mean close down SD and move everyone to HD, no I don't think so.

Analogue was closed down because they could squeeze more digital channels into a single transponder, thereby making more money from the channel operators.

$ly HD is a premium service where they hope to make money by charging the punters more. In order to charge more they have to have a standard service to compare against.

Maybe in the future they'll close SD down, say about 10 or more years?

I'm sure something like that was said during the dual service Analogue/Digital sky/BSB days.....

In the end it would probably cost them more to run the 2 services (as in channels broadcasting the same thing, one HD, one SD), so in the end one will have to go, and SD will be the likely target. Then again, BSB had the superior DMAC equipment when compared to the plain old Pal system that sky had back then.....
 
Sky have finally announced pricing details of its new high definition Sky HD service ahead of its imminent launch.

Sky has given a tentative May 2006 launch date for the availability of the new service.

Existing Sky subscribers can purchase the Sky HD digibox for a one-off cost of £299 with HD subscription at £10 a month. Installation is free (this is an introductory offer). The Sky+ features are free as long as you are subscribing to a minimum of two premium channels as with the standard Sky+.

For new customers the Sky HD costs are as above except half price subscription to Sky channels will be available for the first three months.

Interested Sky HD customers can pre-order the service now with a £30 deposit at the official Sky HD website at www.sky.com/hd Customers that have pre-ordered will receive calls from Sky from early April with installation dates, expected to be in May.

The HD channels available at launch will include National Geographic HD, Sky Sports HD, Sky Box Office HD, Sky Movies 9 HD, Sky Movies 10 HD, Artsworld HD, Sky One, Discovery HD and Sky HD Retail. More HD channels are expected to launch over the coming months.

its still going to be expensive but one thing if you dont have any sports or movie channels and want the hd stuff that mean you wont get sky sports or movies hd channels ?
