Sky + not playing back

Today my friend in London called to tell me my Sky+ box should now be activated. Indeed it has been, I selected a program to record from the EPG and according to the Sky+ planner it was there, but when I tried to view it it gave me this message:

For Your Information
No satellite signal is being received.
Sky+ requires a satellite signal to be able to play back programs

I've checked both Coax cables and both are working. I've swopped them over and tried one at a time to be sure they are both working.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a setting that I need to change or is there maybe something hidden in transponder 2D that I can't get that is stopping me playing back?

Robbie

You may need to change the default transponder Robbie, there are a couple that you can use.
Which one are you using at the moment?

Ah, that's interesting, try changing it to 12207 V 27500 2/3 and see if you get a better default lock. :)

changed it to 12207 and still getting the same message.

Drat, thought that might help.:)

I certainly can't think of any reason why it will let you record but not playback.

I got this link via PM. It looks like the same problem I'm having and the outcome doesn't look good.

Dear Robbie,

I move a lot of SKY + and yours sounds like a "bad 'un"...

Go to the installers setup menu - services 4,0,1 select and find the section that allows you to do a full system reset.. it warns you that you will lose all your recordings !

If you do this and the unit still plays up.. then you'll need to have it changed..normally swapping the hard drive fixes the symptom you are experiencing..

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Thanks, Grande, I gave that a go and still the same problem, Is changing the hard drive something I can do? (keep in mind I live in Egypt}. Is the hard drive the same as a computer hard drive? if it is I should be able to do that here.

OOOOoooooo need funny tools to get in don't I.

Just a small set of Torx screwdrivers should do it Robbie. :)

Hi Robbie,

Given that you live in Egypt (hassle if anything goes wrong - Berlin is bad enough) why not give the following a go ...............

A friend in London had some HDD problems with his SKY+ last December.

It transpired that to do a self-replace of the HDD would be cheaper than getting it fixed by someone official (odd logic).

It was a risk, but general comments on SKY+ problems usually go back to HDD. Suffice to say, and without any 'electronics' knowledge, he upgraded to a 120Gb and fixed his problems - tada!

First stop: hummer.co.uk/disc-change-v2.htm Even comes with Reader's Digest sized step-by-step pics. This guy is a star!

Its a very useful link for anybody wishing to upgrade, or resolve any HDD problems. I ordered a Torx toolkit from ScrewFix Direct for him: but, I recently purchased a €9,99 kit for myself that (conveniently) has a selection of torx bits.:)

Fitting takes minutes. My friend also commented that the replacement HDD was quieter than the old one.;)

Hope this helps,

Mark.

Thanks for the link Mark. I think I have V1 box. I don't have the instant rewind thing on the Sky+ set up. I found some cheep tools thet will do the job. All I need to do now is go and find a hard drive. I just tried to upload a photo of by box but every thing went a bit funny so if photos appear thet shouldn't , then sorry for that now.

It's one of those mornings where nothing is working. I will try again, this time the way I know how. this is a photo of my toys taken by my 2 year old, the box is on the top under the DVD player. Is it a V1?? and should I have the live rewind thing? Going back to bed now and will try to start the day later.

Certainly looks like a version 1 Robbie.

Well, no luck there, I swoped the HDD over to a Samsung 80GB and still have the same meaasge (For Your Information No satellite signal is being received.
Sky+ requires a satellite signal to be able to play back programs) Looks like I'm just gonna have to live with it till I can get my hands on a V2.

[edit]

I have a dumb question.

Forgetting the SKY+ functions for a moment - I take it that your big dish can pick-up Astra 2D [10.70 - 10.95 GHz: 16 channels (D-Band)] without any problems ?

Mark.

software version is what on this box btw? Does the software update work for it?
