In a blog post on the company's webpage, the British Sky Broadcasting company (BSky:cool: announced that its SkyGo app, launched this past July, has broken the 1 million download barrier. The service is a combination of Sky Player and Sky Mobile TV, and is designed to give Sky customers access to programmes and Sky channels while on the move.

The popularity of the service has been rising among Sky subscribers as more of them realize how flexible and convenient the service is. It lets them watch what they want, when they want, where they want. Plus, with Cloud integration well on the way, connecting to the service while on the go will be even easier.

Holly Krill, head of Sky Player and Mobile TV said: “As consumers increasingly get more and more familiar with viewing TV on the go, we understand that they'll want the very best viewing experience possible. In the future, it will become even easier for Sky customers to enjoy SkyGo on the move, thanks to our recent acquisition of The Cloud, Europe's leading network of public access Wi-Fi hotspots.”

“SkyGo's integration with The Cloud will allow customers to enjoy free access via thousands of wireless hotspots throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland,” Krill continued. “So they can enjoy the highest-quality streaming of the content they love while out and about.”

Analysis of usage, detailed in the blog post, revealed that in August alone, subscribers enjoyed 40 million pieces of content using the service. Surprisingly, live streaming was more popular that on-demand views, taking 85% of usage. Sky attributes these figures to the fact that they have a lot of live sports offers as well as the recent heavily followed news stories, such as the London riots and the situation in Libya. Among the data they revealed was a list of their top three channels. Sky Sports took number one, being the most watched channel, while Sky News took second, followed by Sky Sports 2. The busiest day for the service was Transfer deadline day.

SkyGo is available through an iOS app. Subscribers can avail of the app for free on any two devices, including iPads, iPhones, and Xboxes, while non-Sky subscribers can pay a subscription fee, which starts at £15.
