Not that I have a newish TV anywhere, but,

I've seen a few with additional buttons on the remotes with NetFlix or 'Smart hub' for access to the world wide web, but unless there is a specific app that works with a mouse enabled remote, or a microphone is present, the typing of addresses in is a right pain.

The last box I used that I used with mouse enabling was the Wetex Play and that wasn't particularly user friendly either.

So, do modern televisions recognise a keyboard and/or mouse if installed in the USB slots ?

Some LG ones do accept a keyboard - but only a very specific (or so it seems from comments seen and my own experience) LG keyboard which, IIRC, costs around £50-60, and is difficult to source.
 
On my Samsung I have a WIFI mouse and keyboard, works well, although rarely needed as most apps are available to launch using the remote
 
Some (but not all) smart HDTV's allow Bluetooth pairing, don't know if it would work with both a mouse and keyboard, they would have to have Bluetooth capabilities, one could only try.

The only time I find I would need a keyboard with an smart TV would be when entering a password or user's name in subbing to an app.
 
Thanks for the responses. This is for a client that no longer can use the screen on his laptop to surf since started losing his vision about two years ago and is now having trouble with typing words on a small keyboard.

He likes to surf and since he has a newish Sony television with a rather bright screen (his day care appears to have turned up all the dynamic settings), I suggested it might be worth using it with a keyboard and perhaps mouse , rather than try to connect a second screen via HDMI lead (and a larger keyboard to the laptop).

Will report back on whether it works.

re. the Brightness ...... is the set in Shop Mode, maybe? I had no idea there was such a thing until we bought our own new set.

No idea, until I return with a keyboard.
Shop mode is usually a Panasonic thing from memory
 
Ours is a JVC - but 'tis only a badge ........
