I had asked Evan, but he's not budging.

I've got a BDP-S300 player here which does not read discs (I've already tried cleaning the laser head). Since it does not read, I cannot put in a firmware upgrade disc either.

The internal cartridge mechanism has the BDP-100 logo, but other sites claim this is not a Sony part.

Does anybody know what is the correct part number, and if there is a known issue, apart from old age.

I know I could get a new(er) unit for not a lot of money, but it is a shame this would go to the scrap-heap when it does have many redeeming features, including a large number of connections on the rear panel.

..Its not that Im not budging CH ..
I simply dont have a suitable laser..or mechanism ..
My old samsung was canibalized & used to complete a repair for which I got £50 ..so was worth it to me to hang on to.
Laser modules for DVDs and more particularly blu ray players are rarely if ever made available by manufacturers ..
Not a situation I'm happy with ...as second hand ones are the only option and very much a roll of the dice.
From my perspective ...just another nail in the coffin of my profession..
No spares = no repairs = no income and very unhappy customers.
Retirement can't come soon enough.
I'm too old and too ill to retrain ...and not fit enough to collect trolleys in a supermarket car park.

Sods law I'm afraid. That's the trouble when things like this happen. Spares can be unobtainium, but if you want to repair it then Ebay may be your best bet.
 
Soon no-one can repair things, the way the modern World is going.

Just change BIG parts for a small problem.
The new generation can not repair, hence there is no parts

In a sense, yes, "repairing" these days often costs a lot more in spares (if you can find them) than the item is worth, one example is a battery for my laptop, if I wanted one that was identical to the one fitted (an extended capacity type), I'd expect to pay about £110 for a genuine battery, I paid about that much for the whole laptop, so it's not worth me bothering to buy a battery, even repairing the battery may not work as they design the control gear to "die" if you remove the cells from the pack, even though the cells are relatively cheap to buy, so again, not really worth the bother...

Gone are the days where Make do and Mend was the mantra, these days it's more Shut up and spend, Spend SPEND!!! :(
 
Sometimes it's the knock on effect of - the throw away and spend spend spend society that irks me ..
Currently on my bench for repair is a 4:3 aspect ratio video display unit 6" ..
No ident on the unit ..but the actual display panel has a driver board attached which indicates it made by sharp ...
Blank white screen ..backlight lit ..no video displayed ....no menus ..
It was removed from a much larger unit and used for drain inspection ..with a self levelling camera.
The whole unit cost several thousand pounds new...and granted the display is but a part of the whole..
But is no longer available...
similar display panels can be obtained but wont physically fit ..16:9 aspect now.
So ..the very expensive unit will end up scrapped for the sake of the display ...unless I can fix it.
Opened up the display and spent hours tracking signals and voltages working blind..
No service info/schematics ...no manufactures ident ....no spares.
Finally found the defective parts...
burnt resistors approx 1.2mm long ...on o/c sm fuse 2mm long ..and a sm transistor about 1.5 mm square.
Parts not available in the UK ...so had to order from Hong Kong.
Total value of parts approx £3...but cant buy singles so had to order min packs of each ...
Total parts value now around £25 with postage.
So now we wait ...and hopefully avoid scrapping £1000s for the sake of pence...
THAT is the world we live in ...and why I feel redundant.

VS, I am always inspired by your exploits with electrical equipment. I have zero electronics experience but I can turn my hand to pretty much anything, reading your posts/threads I feel confident that I could maybe muddle through repairing the next electrical item in my home that gives up the ghost, or at least figure out why/what went wrong! Obviously with some (a lot!) of help from those more experienced than me on this forum. ;)
 
This is the display in question ..
Considered disposable ...but I hope to fix it.
Even with hands that dont work fully ..and eyes that barely function without magnification.
But ...I hope to thumb my nose at the cash cow flawed system ..and make the customer happy ..and a butty for my efforts.

I've got a bit of a job identifying something too, bought a spares/repairs generator off ebay, mostly to play with, rather than for backup power or anything, thought it had a Chonda engine (chinese clone of a Honda GX160/200), but nope, doesn't match any Chonda engine I've looked at, so I'm going to have to strip it down to find anything that might identify the engine before I can try and fix it up, if I can even fix it at all...

As for the generator part, being a chinese-made generator, the AVR module is more than likely ruined, they usually are in cheap generators that end up on ebay, I can find plenty of AVR modules, but, which one I need is a mystery... :-doh

Can't do anything with it yet though cos it's cold out in the shed, and my little gas heater keeps freezing the cartridge... :-rofl2

That'll be because it's butane, or mostly butane. If you can get a propane cannister they will work down to lower temperatures.
 
Reminds me of my days of owning ageing Vauxhall Vivas and the like. Trying to solder a stub back on or flow solder over a crack in the header tank in freezing weather with a butane torch. Those were the days..... metal radiators!

Yeah, the cartridges are a butane-propane mix, not sure if they do straight-propane for those heaters...:confused
