Sony S760 digibox reception problems

When we moved into our new place the previous owner left a working sky minidish and lnb. They said that they never had any problems with it. After a couple of months we'd got a little spare cash so I bought a Sony 760 from ebay and a subscription only card from sky.

We seem to be able to get some channels most of the time (Sky one, BBC1, challenge - you gotta love Takeshi's Castle) and other channels channels hardly ever (Sky mix, Sci-fi, Paramount). We get a lot of satelitte signal not received messages.

The signal quality is all over the place. Ealier this afternoon I seemed to be getting just about every channel perfectly. Now I can't get anything at all signal strength about half but no lock as signal quality is almost zero. Oddly if I turn off the 22Khz command in the installer menu I get a lock and the dodgy menu music back but no channels (quality and stregth at half).

I've tried just about everything that I can think of.
Updated the system software (now version 3.2.11)
Manual tuning (Found some channels on some frequencies, others no signal received)
Changed every setting in the installer menu that I could find (apart from new installation) like a madman to see if it would help - it didn't. I've set them all back to default.

So, do you Satellitte geniuses think that I've bought a dodgy box or do I need to get the ladder out and mess around with the dish and lnb (or maybe just do that new installation thing)? Let me know if I've left out any information that might help and I'll go and get it straight away.

Huge huge huge thanks in advance for any help

Ufortunately you have no first hand experience that anything is/was working before. The previous owner might have used the dish but who knows what might have happened after!

The best way to check without complicated test equipment is substitution. Hopefully there will be someone nearby with a working set-up you can ask for assistance. Try your digibox/card on his dish/cable and vice-versa. This should give you an idea of where the problem lies.

As you will be doing a lot of unscrewing (!) first check that the F plug at the end of the cable is in good condition and making a good electrical connection; it's just posibble that the problem is here and all the to-ing and fro-ing could remake a faulty joint and leave you even more confused at the end.

I would suggest that you check if anything might be blocking your satellite signal. Is there a tree nearby that may be blowing nearer in the wind. Is there building works next door with a crane interfering etc?
