Space Saving - Out of Date updates

The laptop is again whingeing of running out of hard drive space each time I log on, but this time I can't shift much over to the USB stick (which has a greater capacity at 8GB :-DOH!) . All pictures and the majority of documents are already off the main drive and stored elsewhere, leaving only the operating system, browsers and some automatic upgrades.

Checking through the programme list on Ccleaner, there are four similarly named updates for C++ redistributable, X86, versions 9 and 10, each with a different suffix.
Plus a number of .NET Framework programmes , version, 1.0 2.0 and 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0, and two Java 6 Updates (6 and 31 from Oracle and Sun Micro)

Since only the Install date is marked, am I right in thinking some can be removed if they are either obselete or their requirement is now covered by another programme, and if so, how would I know which ones to remove ?

Some of them are nearly 300MB in space, the total probably exceeds 2GBs, and getting shot of them may allow me to continue with steam power for the foreseeable future.

I sympathise. I was deleting and copying files off my hard disc until I bit the bullet and bought a 300GB disc to replace the 75GB original. As well as the extra, expected, space it's also quieter and faster.
 
Sounds as if it performs very much like a second (or third) wife .............

Not sure if I could do it with this one (Dell Latitude, 8GB IDE, split 7GB C for o/s / email, and 1GB D for piccy/doccy files), there's the imaging of the original drive, plus any added Ram that the lappy might need to work with such increased capacity.

In biting the bullet I may get the proverbial cap in my ass.
 
I think M$ has a deal with hard drive manufacturers, M$ keeps churning out huge updates to take up drive space, and users buy bigger hard drives, and the hard drive manufacturers give M$ a slice of the profits, that's the reason I can come up with for them excessive updates that steal storage space... :confused:

Once upon a time, I happily ran Windows XP Pro on a 6GB hard drive without having space issues,with plenty room for music, programs and storage space, if I did that today, the hard drive would be 100% used by Windows alone because of all the fixes, bug repairs, updates and addons that Automatic Updates downloads... :-wow

I'm sure though you could get a 40GB hard drive at most in that old Dell, or maybe 20GB... :confused:
 
Get a terabyte NASdrive and all your storage problems go away for a good few years. (Network Attached Storage Drive)

I invested in one a couple of years ago and thoroughly recommend it. All our photos & mp3s are stored on it, plus Ive got folders mapped on it for the dreambox backups, OH has her family history stuff mapped to a folder etc.

Plus the one Ive got is RAID so the data is spread over 2 drives - if one pops the data is recreated from the second drive automatically when a replacement drive is slotted in.

Is that Raid 0 or Raid 1 Ross?
 
Cant remember off the top of my head which RAID it is, but its a Netgear Readynas Duo.

Its hidden down the back of the tv and happily runs all my mp3, screensaver pics etc.

I'd rather have answers to the stuff that is already on the machine, and could most likely be removed without trouble.

I'm not a great saver, and once it's posted here/replied to, there's no real reason to keep it.

I would have thought so as well. Incidentally, have you tried using the compress option for the HD CH?

That's the very next thing I intend to buy for the home IT/AV system.

I think so (certainly all the important stuff gets compressed when it requests it), but will check tomorrow

The Netgear looks like the one Ive got, although I bought one with a drive already installed and got a free second drive on a special offer.

Finally got round to checking this and most has been compressed, but many options of the o/s/ antivirus and other programmes refuse to allow it.

And the saving I got was just over 200MB. Good enough for a couple more updates but not much else.
