Just had a look at pics of shuttle Atlantis being moved into the vehicle assembly building for storage for a couple of months and it brought back a few memories.I had a flashback to the Eighties when I was at Reid Kerr college in Paisley and one of the shuttles did a fly past at nearby Glasgow airport atop a 747.Anyone else see it on it's travels?Did a bit of research and I believe it landed at Stanstead on it's way to the Paris airshow.
 
Saw it at Fairford Airforce base, a mate of mine lived near the end of the runway.

Before looking at that forum link, I was thinking it must have been Enterprise doing the touring atop a 747, as that one was the only one equipped for sub-orbital flight on the back of an aircraft, used solely as an atmospheric flight testbed for developing the rest of the fleet, sadly it never reached space... :(

And of course, it was named after a certain starship named Enterprise... O-Ha

(it was to be called Constitution, in reference to the US constitution, but trek fans wanted it named otherwise, and there's a lot of trekkies in NASA, so they changed it, and in response, the USS Enterprise' ship design became known as the "Constitution Class"... :D )
 
Think you may be wrong there mate.I believe it was named after one of the ships that brought the pilgrim fathers to New England.Then again someone may prove otherwise.Regards.

And yes, the name Enterprise came from an old sailing ship, of which there were many, so pinning it down to an exact one is a tough job... O-Ha
