hi, i got flashed by this camera today its in a 30mph limit and i was not speeding i know its there and i travel this road often,

no one behind me appeared to be speeding, could it catch people on the other side of the road ?, i was in the middle lane driving towards the camera,

its got me concerned as i no i was not speeding

thanks for any information.

It may have been set off by a car traveling the other way. I regularly set off a Camera on the opposite side on the Black Country Route traveling away from the M6. They will be able to work out it wasn't you that set it off, thats what the horizontal lines on the road are for.

Normally they are set for around 36 mph to allow for speedometer discrepancies. If you are certain you didn't set it off it will be car going the other way. I wouldn't worry about it in all honesty.

thankyou nano, i was only doing around 26mph, i just thought if i got a ticket what could i do, its the first time i have ever been flashed @ :-0. ive only been driving for 3 years, and would hate getting points for something i havent done,

but youve put my mind at rest thanks

Sorry don't want to worry you again but if that's a forward facing Truvelo camera then it detects a car's speed by induction cables under the road surface. You can just about see them in your screenshot. There is no way a car going the other way could set it off.

thanks timo, my only worry is if they can get it wrong ?, i no its there and always very cautious around it, unless it got me for going to slow lol, i was quite close to the camera when it went off,

so it could have been somone behind slowing down at the last second, it gets lots of peeps as not many people realise the speed limit is 30mph in this stretch.

Martin, you can always submit this Thread in your defence !

It's clear enough you didn't do it, so what Judge could fail to acquit you on all Charges?! :-toilet

Truvelos don't have a flash Timo. The first thing you know about being done by a Truvelo is when that little brown envelope drops through your door.

The forward facing Truvelo camera system is designed to take photographs of the front of a passing vehicle, this allows the picture taken to show the driver of the vehicle as well.

To avoid the 'flash' which is given out by a rear facing Gatso camera the Truvelo system uses an infra red flash which produces no visible 'flash' to the approaching driver. These rely on 3 white-lines in the road, painted just before the camera, and are triggered by strips in the road, used to gain the vehicles speed.
All camera setups have to have a secondary fall back system to work out the speed of the vehicle, that's what the white marker lines are for. If these lines cannot be seen due to lets say snow, ice or the road being resurfaced then you cannot be prosecuted for the offence.

The same can be said if you get a speeding fine produced from a Gatso when you have been traveling towards it.

In my driving career i have managed to have 3 speeding offences and two parking offences thrown out because the authorities didn't follow the rules. Its great when your cousin is a traffic cop, he tells you all the rules and regulations so you can get away with most things if the rules haven't been followed to the letter :-lmao

I rest my case M'lud

Just out of interest what is the secondary fall back system on a mobile speed camera ? Both me and the wife got caught doing 34 in a 30 last year by 2 different mobile speed cameras and we both ended up on a speed awareness course. Unless you want the case dealt with in court you dont even get to see the photographic evidence so your basically convicting yourself.

I'm guessing the Trufellos use an IR flash of some king. Also another guess is they take two pictures at set time between each capture. The speed can be worked out using a time/distance formula or something like that. Been a few years since last read about how the cams work. The local boy racers used to chuck cardboard boxes over the cams (which weren't even commissioned/active in the first place).

The only thing you can ask when being done by a mobile camera is if it has been calibrated and if the operator has been certified and fully trained to use it. Other than that your pretty much fooked.

They take the opinion of the operator as the back up. I got done last march doing 56mph in a 40mph zone at 5am when there was fook all on the road and to make it funnier it was a straight dual carriageway . I tried all the usual tricks, but alas it had been calibrated and the guy using it was trained.

I was going too fast to go on the speed awareness course, not that i would have gone on it even if it was offered. It would have been twice the price and to be honest the extra 3 points only added £12 to my premium anyway. I had a clean licence for 12 months which was nice. Now i'm back on my usual 3 points.

The older speed detector guns were quite funny. There was a program on the tv about them a few years ago where they clocked a brick wall doing 60mph :-lmao

Yes I remember that programme. Something about how the laser refracted and the reading was totally absurd. Also heard of people trying to use it to back them up. They lost the appeal.

If you ask for the evidence they have to give it to you by law regardless of if you go to court or not.

They are only within their rights to withhold the information until they know who the driver was because of the data protection act. Once you have admitted you were driving you can then ask for the evidence which they have to give you.

its then up to you whether you go to court or take the fine. Everyone has a right to defend themselves and if the photo they have is the evidence you have a legal right to see it. When i last got done i managed to drag it out until June when i finally paid the fine for that very reason.

I thought they gave a redish flash which I assumed was some of the IR light spilling into our visible spectrum? I could swear I've seen one in action (not triggered by me).

They have forward facing cameras in Finland with white flashes (not sure of the make but work similar to the UK spec Truvelos). Not nice at night. Perhaps the local authorities think if you are speeding you deserve to be blinded and crash?!

I would say this is the most likely reason. The pick up points are quite far back.

Most of them don't work where i live. Could have something to do with when they do get somebody they mysteriously self combust with the help of a tyre and a bit of unleaded.

They look ever so pretty when they are on fire lol. There are several in the Area that the police have just given up on, probably due to as soon as they are fixed, the following day they go up in flames again. Apparently the will all be switched off in the West Midlands soon anyway as the police force can't afford to keep them running since they no longer get any of the revenue from them.

Here a few that were done earlier that should brighten up every ones day.

Sad thing is, destroying the camera is not the solution, cos they tend to record video constantly, in a unit stored either remotely or in the ground underneath the camera, so people who trash the cameras get caught on camera anyway...

Best way to not get caught speeding though is to not speed, the roads aren't race tracks... ;)
