I have bought and tried 2 different splitters and got the same problem.

My dish had to be mounted at the back of the house on a long pole, due to my living room/bedroom both being on the front of the house I decided to run the coas over the roof and into the bedroom, then down through the floor into the living room below.

When I got a telly in my bedroom I decided that it would be easier to just split the coax for a fta sat box upstairs rather than mess with the old looking Aeriel coax which was doing the job well for the downstairs telly.........

As the coax from the dish comes into the bedroom, this is where the splitter is.

The problem is this: the splitter only seems to work out of one exit/socket. I have tried turning both box's off (up and down sitars) and trying them both on each socket with each box turned on/off....every permutations. Still only one works, even bought a new one thinking the old one was broke. Same thing.

Any ideas?

You cannot use splitters there with satellite downlinks. The cable passes varying voltages back to the lnb depending on the frequency range of the channel you select. In order for that to partially work you would have to switch off the other stb not being used. You need to buy a twin lnb or quad and use just 2 outputs and two separate cables one for each box
 
I am more than happy to use one reciver at a time though with the one Im not using turned off........

I do not know what is wrong with your splitter, it may not be functioning or you may have shorted it out by having both boxes on, I do not know, I suggest you stick to the correct method highlighted above for trouble free viewing as splitters are neither recommended nor reliable and it is easy to forget to switch the other stb off
 
Try using the IF loopthrough, that should work OK as a temporary measure, until you get around to running another coax.

Could also be the cable type of course, I assume that you have used decent cable, eg wf100 or similar.
 
What type of splitters did you use?

They need to be "F" type with power pass on both legs.
 
..what about trying a smart priority switch ...assuming only one box at a time is needed ?

Regarding using a SPS, don't know what boxes the OP is using, but if one is a Sky digibox then be sure to use the slave input of the switch for the digibox, as LNB power is always on and will take command of the switch.

Connect the other box to the master input so that it can control which box can be used at one time.

Not a good idea to remove LNB power from the digibox though, as it needs to be left connected for updates.

Good point Llew, as this is in the general dish setup section, hadn't thought about one of them being a Sky box.

If it is, then bite the bullet and put a quad LNB on the dish, very cheap fromn ebay and you will have no problems.

Also if you are only watching one at a time and the main ine is a Sky digibox, then why not just send a cable up to the bedroom from the RF2 outlet and use a TV Link Eye.

Although a quad LNb would be the norm.
 
Unfortunately, I live in a block of apartments with a communal dish and only one feed into my living room, so I can't get the full use of my sky+ box, by being able to watch one channel whilst recording another.
