The Swiss public broadcaster SRG SSR is preparing changes in the distribution of some of its programs on the Eutelsat Hot Bird satellite system at the 13 ° E position . In a month, the migration of some programs to another transponder will begin.
Day D is scheduled for March 9, 2021, when the SRG SSR will make changes in the distribution on transponder number 123 (freq. 10.971 GHz). Three SRG television program services - SRF Info, RSI LA 1 and RSI LA 2, as well as 26 radio stations (so far on TP 17) will be transferred to this transponder to the existing programs. The transmission on transponder 17 (freq. 11.526 GHz) will end at the end of June.

Viewers of SRG SDR and Kabelio have to retune the SRG SSR programs to the new parameters in the period between 12.3. and 26.5.2021. From March 12, the SRG SSR will insert rotating text information on the programs on TP 17 about the need to retune the programs. From May 26 to the end of June, a static screen with information about new parameters will be broadcast on TP 17 instead of television programs.

SRG SSR intends to inform about the need to retune its set top box or TV with a satellite tuner by a letter in which viewers will receive detailed information and help with retuning.

From July, the SRG SSR will use one transponder at 13 ° E. According to the operator, the technical quality will be maintained.

All services on 11526H now duplicated on 10971H, and the originals labelled as “OLD”.

The “encoder improvements” they’ve mentioned in doing this seem to be that they’re now employing statistical multiplexing on 10971H with each TV channel being variable bitrate rather than a constant ~11Mbps as before. Recording sizes should be a fair bit smaller!

Services are still all MPEG4 H264 720p as before. The change to HEVC is pushed back apparently.

May 2021Factsheet Transponder conversion1) Currently the SRG operates a satellite transponder (TR123) in MPEG-4 AVC / h.264 (video compression) to spread its offer via satellites.2) From June 2021 a qualitatively better SRG signal via the B2B Broadband Playout (WVP) of the SRG.3) The SRG intends to migrate from the current MPEG-4 AVC / h.264 video compression to the HEVC / h.265 video compression in the course of 2024. The efficient coding enables an image quality improvement (eg Full HD with HDR / WCG) to be achieved at the same data rate.4) The introduction of UHD in production and distribution is subject to special exceptional cases before 2024 (SRG full programs for events or events UHD content will be offered via SRG's B2B Reseller Playout (WVP) if available
