Today Aug 4 (Day of Abolition of priviledges ,back in 1789,quite a day to remember!!)

Nice find! Equipe 21 is also on 5W multistream FTA. Former president Jacques Chirac was a sumo fan if I remember correctly

After hosting the Olympic boxing, the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo reverts to being a sumo area for the September Aki basho, beginning on Sunday 12th.

Terunofuji makes his debut as Yokozuna despite being beaten in a final day showdown against Hakuho in July, the Yokuzuna Deliberation Council deeming his 14-1 win/loss record as being worthy of the highest rank.

Yokozuna Hakuho will be absent, after a wrestler tested positive for covid at his Miyagino stable.

Ozeki Takakeisho is kadoban after gaining only one victory before pulling out in July, he needs eight victories to avoid demotion.

It's been on the cards for a while but I hoped after his 15-0 in July he would continue for a while longer. Not my favourite wrestler but definitely the best I have ever seen. His bouts against Asashoryu are a joy to watch:

Hakuho's retirement was not without controversy, he was unusually made to sign a pledge that he would not act in a way to that was contradictory to the "spirit of the way of sumo". He will now take up a coaching role at the Miyagino stable, before either setting up his own or taking over Miyagino when the current stable master retires.

In other news fan favourite Abi returns to the top division after a three tournament suspension for breaking covid regulations. It took Abi four further tournaments to climb back up to climb back up to makuuchi. Here he is performing pre-bout shiko:

Wow a respected source saying there may be a sumo event/exhibition at the Royal Albert Hall in October 2023!

The 5 day Grand Sumo Tournament/Hitachi Cup was held in the same venue in 1991:

In 1991, the Hall was honoured to host the first ever sumo wrestling tournament to be staged outside Japan.

In November Yokozuna Terunofuji won with a perfect 15-0 record, also known as a zensho yusho, which means 'perfect tournament victory' in English.



Ones to watch:

Abi was runner up (jun-yusho) in November with a 12-3 record, he also gave Terunofuji a fright and was awarded the kanto-sho (fighting spirit) special prize.



Ura is up to a career high rank of maegashira 2 east after a 10-5 record in November. He was also awarded the gino-sho (technique) special prize.



Takayasu will be absent after positive covid tests at his stable. Hidenoumi will be missing after being withdrawn by his stablemaster, reports are he had visited an illegal casino. Gambling is massively restricted in Japan and illegal gambling is often linked to the Yakuza organised crime group. If proven, a hefty punishment will be coming his way.
