My Satellite Setup
1.9M dish dual C120 O.3 lnb with sky box and humax hdr . (28.2 East) Also 135CM dish pointed at Nilesat (7 west) BEIN Sports HD

I have just purchased a new pc WITHOUT an operating system. I have a genuine version of windows XP pro 32 bit. Is it possible to use the same activation key to activate X64 bit. Also is it worth upgrading to X64.
(I have 4Gb ram)

My understanding is that they are two different series of keys for the 32 and 64 bit versions of XP but if the 32 bit key is no longer in use why not try it. If it is still in use I suspect you will soon know about it. what do you have to lose?
 
32 bit XP can only use about 3-1/2 GB of your memory, 64 bit can use it all. On the other hand there aren't that many programs around that use the 64 bit environment properly. I belive that 32 bit programs in 64 bit XP don't run as well as in their native 32 bit XP.

32 bit XP with all that memory should really fly. Unless you have a real reason, or just want to experiment, I would stick to 32 bit.
 
I agree with PaulR but, If you get your hands on a copy of XP Professional x64 Edition it can quite happily run 32 + 64 bit apps.

Personally I wouldn't be bothered for all you would benefit for the cost.

64 bit processing has had a slow uptake because applications would need to be recoded to take full advantage of it. It'll get there in the end, but win XP 64 will probably be history by the time it does

What I have a problem with, and prehaps someone could guide me, is the memory issue. Will XP & Vista 32bit use my full 4Gb. I read somewhere that 32 bit cannot cope with more than 3Gb. Or am I talking through the rear end. I have genuine keys for both xp-32 bit and Vista 32 bit.
 
No - 32 bit operating systems wont use more than 3GB or maybe 3.5GB Some info here:

Vista premium 32 bit, it is then. As I stated earlier I have the keys for 32 bit xp & vista, and dowloaded vista premium and xp 64 bit for the internet. Not knowing for sure if the keys are inter changable I will side with safety.

That article is only half right, Its not the OS that is restricting the amount of addressable memory, Its the processor. The OS is only 32 or 64 bit because the processor it runs on is.

The processor has to be able to address every byte of memory directly. This has nothing to do with the OS.

They failed to mention the word processor once in the article.:)

I have an Athlon DUAL CORE AM2 5000+ which is 32 or 64 bit
 
Having just installed the 64bit with a 32 bit key - I can confirm it WILL NOT WORK.

Have to say that I'm not surprised as there different keys for XP depending on whether it's an OE, corporate or retail edition. I think that keys are also different if the version has a different integrated Service Pack.

No doubt there are even more versions than that...
