“The first 3DTV was sold in the UK in April last year, and when the sets went on sale there was concern about 3D glasses cross-compatibility, and how future-proof the technology was,” said Ben Stevens, technology expert for Which?.

Up to now, all 3D glasses are not cross compatible. In fact, they are brand specific. However, technology giants, Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony have teamed up with X6D Limited (XpanD 3D) in order to create active shutter 3DTV glasses that will be a technology standard. The project, known as the 'Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative' hopes to boost 3D across the globe while giving “a better consumer experience across products.”

According to Sony, the 3D glasses will be “backward compatible with 2011 3D active TVs,” which basically means it will work with all past and future 3DTVs. Sony also revealed that Bluetooth is likely to be the adopted wireless signal to enable the 3DTVs to communicate with active shutter 3D glasses, since Samsung introduced Bluetooth receivers earlier this year. Other 3D glasses us infrared signal or radio-frequency, which is what LG employs for its active shutter technology.

Maria Costeira, chief executive of XpanD, said that the company is looking to develop both infrared and radio-frequency technology. “This initiative reinforces the consumer electronics industry's commitment to highest 3D quality and provides technology consumers and theatre-goers with a simple but powerful solution to the challenge of interoperability.”

Universal glasses are likely to be a hit among consumers. The NPD Group, a market researcher, found that active 3DTV technology is the most popular choice for those wanting a 3DTV. Roughly 96% of the 3DTV market in the U.S. was made up of active 3D technology in the first half of 2011 alone.

Don't just plan your 3D party yet, though. These universal active 3DTV glasses won't hit the market till 2012.

A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

2012 ? By then, renticular technology that enables 3D without glasses will make any 'standard' redundant.
