Herews a real bit of history. This is the famous Indian head testcard which was introduced as far back as 1939 in America!

Its got its own wiki page!

Ive seen this one a couple of times in European skies, but it seems to be exceptionally rare here in Europe.

Apparently with the digital switch over in America many of the stations have been carrying this image as the analogue transmitters have been switched off for the final time!

:-worship

Heres one I remember well. I first saw this one a few months before Channel 4 launched back in November 1982. In those pre satellite days (we had just three tv channels - BBC 1 BBC 2 & Central ITV!) I was idly tuning across the tv band in the faint hope of picking up the Anglia ITV signals from Sandy Heath when I ran across this - transmitting off the Sutton Coldfield transmitter. :D

After C4 launched it was to be 15 years before the UK got a fifth terrestrial channel! In March 1997 Channel 5 launched in parts of the UK only - only the main sites were ever equipped for the new service, it was deemed too expensive to do all the hundreds of relays.

This was another channel I found by accident whilst idly tuning across the tv band - this time off the Selkirk mast :D

Hi Analoguesat ...
This thread has taken off in a big way ..
I have to admit ..I'm really enjoying checking in to see the latest captures ..or stuff from the archives..
Any chance you will be collecting all of them into one rar or zip at some point..
I'd certainly like a copy of that ..should you decide to do it.

I suppose this is 'technically' cheating ...but couldn't resist..
An old BBC testcard ..seen briefly during the comedy sketch show 'Armstrong & Miller' ..
It popped on screen for half a second during the comedy song lampoon toward the end of the show..
;)
