Testcards

Not working for QVC on the side are you??

My offering (after my previous one being made by myself!!!), a Freeview-accessed BBC Widescreen testcard, accessed by doing the following:

1. Tune to the BBCi channel (currently ch. 105)
2. When the BBCi background appears, press Yellow (within 30 secs)
3. Tune away to a different channel
4. Tune back to the BBCi channel (currently ch. 105)
5. When the BBCi background appears, press Green (within 30 secs)
The word 'Secret' will appear in the top right hand corner
6. Wait until the status page appears
7. Press Green, and bask in the glory of the BBC Widescreen Test card.

I think my Philips VHS-Combi portable's a bit out of alignment... :-rofl2

Its not often you see a testcard in an advert! This one is from a madbid.com advert and is radiating on UK tv atm. This particular example was spotted on Virgin 1.

This one is back on UK tv again - Ive just seen it on an advert on Eurosport.

A rare feed from Haiti noted on 10E this evening.

This rather hideous STV +1 example can be found on Astra 2D :)

The square lower right was bouncing around the screen just like in the old Pong game :D

Hi Guys. Working in the broadcasting industry I'm always a little bemused of the showing of colour bars examples as test 'cards'. In the industry a test card shows frequency gratings and grey scales as well as linear lines and phase variances e.g. Philips electronic variants and the good old Test Card F variants.

As I subscribe to this thread I always feverishly look forward to an email that a new test card is being displayed but disappointed when it's only colour bars. Understanding that there is a need to document these, perhaps they could be consigned, with respect, to another thread? oMusing....o entitled 'How Many Colour Bars can you shake a stick at? :-biglaugh

You doth protest too much. Of course, you're right that test cards are as you point out for alignment purposes, but in the context of this section, they are called that merely to indicate that the card is being transmitted for testing prior to the actual channel starting up.

No, I don't think I do protesteth too much (sounds like Alan Partridge :) ), I feel there's subtlety in a test card - any station can bung up a load of colour bars.... Some change the Test Card F pic in the centre to another pic, others use the American Indian Chief test card, etc... there's some interest there surely?

No... the thread is named test cards, not IDs transmitted prior to a channel starting up.
