Hi,

My mother has just installed a TEVION HDSR 420 box on her TV downstairs and receives digital TV.

I have a room upstairs. Can I use her system to get digital TV on my rather old TV.

If so, we would need to have independent controls. That is, we would need to view different and maybe the same channels when we choose. Is this possible? If so, how could it be arranged?

To watch different channels at the same time you need a second satellite receiver.

This means a second cable run from the dish to the second room. (Run 2 if you want a pvr in there.)
 
This means you will need a twin ouput (2) or quad output (4) LNB (the small block on the end of the satellite arm).
 
I am not too clear.

What about putting a Y piece at the end of the first TEVION HDSR 420 box, then introducing a second TEVION HDSR 420 box at the second TV?

If you mean a T-piece or Splitter, no you can't.

The processes between LNB (Dish end) and Receiver are two way as Band/Polarity switching signals need to be sent, so splitting the cable will diminish signal and cause conflicts.

As stated, you need a separate feed for each Tuner: So the LNB needs changing for a quad output device.

A few random questions:

What is the advantage of satellite tv over terrestial tv? I assume that digital broadcasters transmit their signals to a satellite then this satellite transmits them to earth. Why not omit the satellite? Remember I know little.

How many satellites are there in orbit that transmit tv and radio broadcasts?

Do different companies use different satellites? I assume that these companies rent bandwidth on satellites that have been sent into space.

The satellite receiver sends power and also instructions to the LNB which then responds accordingly.

Not everywhere in the UK (or any other country come to that) can get a good signal from a terrestrial transmitter. There's also the advantage that a satellite has a lot more frequency bandwidth available so there can be many, many more channels available. In the UK most are part of $ly's encrypted packages so you have to pay to receive them but even the FTA (free to air) channels are more numerous. Admittedly an awful lot are rubbish but there are some genuinely useful ones such the +1 variations of, say ITV3 and ITV4.

Hundreds! And even on a single position there might be several "co-located" satellites. 28E (where $ly and Freesat are broadcast from) effectively have 4 satellites there masquerading as a single source.

Yes. At 28E there are thyree satellites owned by SES Astra and one owned by Eutelsat. TV companies then rent frequencies off the satellite owners. These TV companies can then themselves sub-rent out the frequencies if they want to.

Then there are the satellites at different positions in the sky. These are intended to serve different countries but can be picked up over a wide area outside their intended targets.

Those Asta satellites that you mention. I assume that Astra build them then pay NASA! to launch them into space?

I think that the name of my satellite is: 28.2E ASTRA 2A-B-D. Can you translate this? However, I also note that ASTRA 2abdEuro1 seems to be around.

Any idea what WGS84 refers to in terms of LAT and LONG.

If you want to connect a satellite receiver to a TV that doesn't have a scart input on the back (or phono connectors) then you need a receiver that has an RF modulator built-in. This will create an analogue TV radio signal. You connect the satellite receiver to the TV between the TV aerial and aerial input on the TV and then tune the TV into this signal on a spare channel.

Note that NONE of the Freesat branded receivers have RF modulators. They're becoming rare on ordinary satellite receivers and the only generally available receiver nowadays with one built in are $ly's offerings.

Almost. There are various satellite constructing companies in the world such as Hughes (2A, 2D), Astrium (2B), Boeing, Alcatel (Eurobird), etc. I think that all of Astra's satellites are now launched from French Guiana but earlier ones were launched in Russia. Other launch pads are in China and India and no doubt elsewhere.

As I said above, the single position in the sky actually contains several satellites (colocation). At 28.2E there are three - Astra 2A, 2B and 2D. Close by at 28.5E is Eurobird which, for most satellite dishes, is effectively colocated as well.

I had to look this one up as I hadn't heard of it. It stands for World Geodetic System and basically is a method of mapping the world's surface. It's used in GPS systems.

If the satellite receiver was tuned in to just one spare channel would this mean that I could only watch one channel from the statellite?

Would it not also be possible to use a standard satellite receiver then include an RF modulator between it (the receiver) and the TV?

Whatever the sat receiver was showing would be output on a spare UHF channel so you'd tune the TV to (say) channel 33 and then you would see whatever the satellite box was receiving, so you'd then change channels with the satellite remote.

Yes, you could use an external modulator - or you could pick up a cheap TV with scart from a car boot/auction
 
Just a thought....that Tevion box was sold complete with Dish and LNB. If that dish is what she is using then it won't be the standard S_y LNB so you may need a different type if you are converting to dual or quad.

A couple of points to clarify your comments.

Tune to say channel 33. Then change channels using a remote control. I assume that you mean change the channels from the satellite while using channel 33 on the TV?

Regarding the Tevion kit.

Do you mean a different LNB, or a different dish?

Some good news (I think)

I have managed to have a look at part of the back of the TV (an old set, weighs a ton).

I note that there appears to be what looks like a SCART socket next to the aerial socket. Could it be anything else?

On the front of the set are two phono points. One yellow, one black. The yellow has an oval with an arrow pointing to the middle, and the black has a circle with an arrow pointing to the middle. Any idea what these connections are used for?

The LNB. The S-y minidish LNB comes with a bracket to fit the dish arm, but non-Sky dishes are generally only supplied with a clamp designed for LNBs with 40mm diameter 'neck.' Take a look on Fleabay to get more idea of what I'm trying to explain. It had crossed my mind that it would have to be pretty ancient not to have a scart socket. Seems you also have audio and video in through the phono sockets. On the front to allow easy connection from camcorder, perhaps.

I have been looking at the back of mother's Tevion receiver.

I note that it is connected to the TV by the HDMI connection and has a spare SCART port.

If I connected this spare port to the an HDMI or SCART port on a second TEVION receiver at my set would I be able to receive satellite signals and also be able to control the channels independently using ta remote control? The TV's would need to be independently controllable?

PS. I believe that the LNB is setup for one set.
 
If there is only one Tevion receiver then it can only output one channel at a time whether it's via an HDMI lead, Scart lead or both. Or have I misread your post? It almost seems like you want to connect two Tevion receivers together via the Scart ports.
 
There's a number of different video out connections on the back so that is is compatible with a range of TVs, but they will all show the same thing. It only has one tuner so can't 'watch one while recording something different.' If you want to watch satellite on your TV independent of what's being watched downstairs, then you need a receiver (doesn't have to be Tevion), but it needs its own cable running to a double or quad LNB

I have a few questions from my general reading that you may/maynot choose to answer:

The dish seems to point to four satellites 2A, 2B, 2D, and Euro. I assume that all the signals will be received at the dish simultaneously, and that the receiver (through my choice) selects which signal I will view.

It seems that the larger the dish is the better. Is this because I will collect more signals? What about the significance of more noise?

When we were discussing modulation, you made the point that a RF modulator would be needed to send signals through an aerial socket. I may be wrong, but does not a RF modulator simply reduce the intensity of the signal? I was wondering if a digital analog converter would be a better idea?

I assume that LNB devices can simply be bought and installed on current dishes?

I remember you mentioned that a sky system seems to work differently that say a Tevion system. The Sky LNB is standard and the Tevion LNB is not. Can you elaborate a little more.

The dish is a reflector so focuses the incoming signal on the LNB. The standard S_y minidish is wider than it is tall, so the LNB is optimised to that shape. Other dishes are taller and so their LNBs are optimised differently. One type will work on the other but will not perform at its best. Yes, there are several satellites 'co-located' and the receiver does the selecting. Bigger dishes allow reception of weaker signals (so you could view programs from weaker satellites - but you'd have to move the dish to point at them). The only advantage of a bigger dish when viewing at 28E is if you had reception problems in bad weather.

The RF modulator is modulating the output from the receiver and combines the audio and video information and modulates it as a UHF signal which can then be 'received' by an analogue TV....it doesn't affect the satellite signal

Yup thats right :) Ther are a 100 or so different frequencies in use, each with a dozen or so channels on it.All this is invisible to Freesat or Sky boxes as they just alocate each tv channel a separate number on the epg system The frequencies are only of interest to users who have boxes that dont have epg's on them (hobby boxers, the cheap stuff you get from Lidl, B&Q or Maplin etc)

Depends what you want to watch - in the UK a 60cm dish is plenty for the 28E channels. If you put too big a dish in you can actually overload the tuner in the receiver causing odd effects.

The only thing you would need an rf modulator for is to put a scart source onto an rf distribution system in the house, or for putting a receiver output onto a very old tv that doesnt have scart on them (theres still plenty of old tv's around in bedrooms, offices etc!)

You can buy them cheap from Ebay, or most satellite dealers - the only restriction is dont buy Sky lnb's for use on round dishes, and dont buy none Sky lnb's on oval Sky dishes. (They will work, but not optimally - Sky lnb's are engineered for oval dishes).



It may seem daunting but dont get too hung up in the technical stuff - its pretty simple really :)
