The Thai satellite operator Thaicom will use the older telecommunications satellite Eutelsat 36B (formerly Eutelsat W7 ) at the new orbital position of 50.5°E, at which it was parked just today.

Eutelsat 36B originally served at position 36°E for the needs of customers in the Russian Federation (NTV Plus, Trikolor) and clients in Africa. Recently, the aforementioned satellite was replaced by a new Eutelsat 36D telecommunications device, and the original one could find a new application in a new position.

Eutelsat 36B, after moving from position 36°E to 50.5°E, was given the new name Thaicom 9A . The satellite serves to protect Thailand's rights to the 50.5°E position, which will expire on November 27, 2024. If Thailand did not have a satellite here, it would lose the position. It won't have its own satellite for this position until next year.

Thailand has the rights to use the orbital position of 50.5°E for 20 years.

The start of commercial operations from the new position of 50.5°E is expected during the first quarter of 2025. Thaicom wants to provide services in Thailand and some Asian countries from the new slot. In the future also in Western countries, including Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Blimey that was cutting it fine!

That info about serving Europe in the future is interesting, although I cant imagine there will be much demand for services from an orbital slot so far east....

Yes, i can see this. The position is right.

12541.67 MHz is at the center of a 72 MHz transponder.
I think it has been switched on for several weeks already (raised spectrum), only now I found the carrier (circle in constellation).
Who knows, a Thaicom promo will appear again like 10 years ago (on NSS-5, 12710 V 26670). But I couldn't receive it.
