The Columbus Project is now nearing completion and has been renamed to the Binocular Telescope Project
This is a site in Arizona where two 8.4m mirrors, a set of shape adjuster motors, a cryogenic unit and some rather flash computer programmes utilising null interferometry processing power will be combined to produce the largest optical telescope built to date, with a resolution projected to be 50% greater than the Hubble Space telescope.
One of the mirrors has been delivered to the site this week, and the completion of the hardware is expected sometime in December.
