Thoughts on a Gibertini 85cm dish

Right! Having looked at all the options I have been reading up about the Gibertini 85cm dish. OK, so it's not quite as big as the 1m, but it seems it perform as good as a 1m. What do you guys think? I really don't fancy trying to lift a 1m dish into place. ;)
 
It won't, if it did they wouldn't make a 1m version. Lifting a 1m Gib up a ladder onto a pole isn't that hard, the only tip I would suggest is to fix a jubilee clip round the pole at a point just below the bottom motor bracket, it makes setting the azimuth a lot less stressful.
 
LOL! I know it won't have the gain of the 1m, but it does seem to be a popular dish with satellite hobbyists.
 
I agree with CJ, get the 1M...you'll only have 'what if' moments later on......

The FR Penta 85cm is another well performer.
 
How about a Gibby PL100 in anthracite colour from Digi-Sat-Online, Germany? Reading these, it seems the 1m is the one to go for. Soz for going on guys, but I need to make the right decision as I can't go back afterwards. Good tip Aceb!
 
The 1 mtr Gibby has the best gain of any dish this size,

100 cm Gibertini Gain: @10.70 GHz 39.2 dB, @11.70 GHz 39.95 dB, @12.75 GHz 40.70 dB
85 cm Gibertini Gain: @10.70 GHz 37.8 dB, @11.70 GHz 38.5 dB, @ 12.75 GHz 39.3 dB

Looking at the specifications for both dishes above the 85 cm has less gain than my 88 cm mesh dish with a Gain reading @ 10.7 - 12.75 of 38.2-39.7 dB.
 
I think the best thing for me to do is wait until my brick shed gets built and then I can judge things better then. It won't be up too high so there's a good chance I can get a 1m up without too much strain. I'll hold off until then. Basically, I'm rubbish with heights and anything more than a few feet up and I get vertigo. Time to take a step back and look at the situation in a new light. ;)
 
Just a last word here peeps. Where I live the winds get very strong here especially in winter as I live on the side of a hill. When I lived at my folks (literally across the road from where I live now) I had a concentric 1m solid dish about 20 years ago. The winds used to hammer that dish badly so I must take that into account when I finally choose. I'd rather lose a few channels than lose a dish! The bigger the dish - the higher wind load it has to take. It's possible I may have to compromise and get a 1m perforated dish to try and reduce the wind load on it. All suggestions have been duly noted and logged! :) :) :)

If your mast/mount is solid and properly dimonsioned (i.e. meets requirements of dish) then the dish should stay in place.
The failing link could be the dish, then. Most metal dishes of about 90cm-100m should withstand most things you throw at them, providing the mount stays true. There are litterally millions of these installed througout Europe that has survived year-on-year.

However, if the mounting position of your dish might mean a high-risk of damage to the dish itself during extreme (but expected) weather conditions, you need to should consider a SMC dish (Channel Master, Prodelin, Cahors/Visiosat etc). These dihes will withstand more battering an abuse by weater and still retain their shape (and performance). They have, however, mostly a higher cost. As for the weight, some of the SMC dishes actually weigh less than similar sized steel dishes, but in most respects there's little difference. Performance-wise, they are very similar to steel dises, and although theoretically equivalent to metal dishes, they do tend to have slightly better gain.

But really; get a 1m dish of your choice, put it up on a proper mount/pole, be happy, and if it goes bonkes after some years - get another one! Don't nit-pick on size, get the largest you possibly can; there's no magic difference between the manufaturers (except for the really sh*tty chinese job). Far more important than, say, LNB make and model. (Not that this is not relevan, it is just minor compare to dish size).
