Dreambox 500S. 95cm dish, DG 120+ DiSEqC H-H
My Location
Eastern Borders
Is this right?

I'm at 2 degrees, 5.0 minutes West and the angle between true and magnetic south is 3 deg.

So if I point my dish at 183 degrees (true south) drive the motor to 1 degree west then move the whole thing to point at 182 degrees as 1 degree west is east of my position Ishould be on Thor?

You'll never be able to align a dish properly using a compass.


Send the dish to 1W (the motor scale will read 1 degree east), then adjust the system by the getting the best signal on 11325H for example.

Have a read of rolfw 's motor setup guide for details.

What you did not state is whether your difference between True and Magnetic is increasing or decreasing yearly....if on the increase you add.... if on the decrease you subtract.

It's increasing

I wasn't planning on soley using a compass. Just get the direction of mag south and add on the difference to get true south. Then, after finding true south take line of sight on something in the area that is in line with that and move the assembly in lne with that. Drive the motor to 1W then, if my thinking is correct, move the assembly 1 deg east as I'm west of Thor.

Unfortunately my box doesn't support USUALS
 
It really is not necessary to worry about the difference between mag south and true south. The satellite itself will tell you that you have it right as you'll get a signal and the correct channels.

Not having USALS doesn't matter, just send it so the motor reads about 1 degree east.
 
Compasses and geometry can often hinder not help they are no substitute for finding the signals themselves.

All you need is patience
