I've just bought a BBC DVD of a wartime comedy Frankie Howerd made in 1982.

'Then Churchill To Me' wasn't broadcast at the time alledgedly because of the Falklands war, but I also heard that the BBC thought it just wasn't good enough.

It was eventually screened 18 years later on satellite, and then on BBC2. But has since been largely forgotten about.

It's weird when you watch something like this. Here we have Frankie talking to a 1982 TV audience that never were. Just weird.

This made me wondering if there were many other TV programmes shelved forever, for whatever reason.

If anyone knows of a web site about shelved programmes, please let me know. Thanks. :D

I have a couple of video tapes of Up Pompeii (the series). Whilst the film is actually well edited and complete in terms of the story/humour and characters, the TV series falls down miserably, and Mr Howerd is the main culprit.

His inability to interact with the audience (except with one or two looks, a flic of the toga, or his catchphrase response) means that only the scripted faux-pas remains, which could be done and dusted in about four minutes.

The humour has aged badly and Frankie should really be let go, I am not in the least bit surprised the BBC canned the other show before general release.
 
I do remember the pilot show for an X-files spinoff 'The Lone Gunmen' being shelved due to the nature of its content..
"The pilot episode, which first aired on March 4, 2001, concerned a terrorist
plot to fly a hijacked airplane into the World Trade Center towers."

I believe it did eventually get released with the box set ...but I suspect was never aired..

A longer list would be programmes that were both made, and aired, but really shouldn't have been.

@Vipersan, Yeah things in the news can often affect TV programming...

@Channel Hopper...this 1982 Howerd comedy wasn't very funny, but it's worth watching. It was also like Up Pompeii, in that Frankie addressed the audience...
