tv says weak signal

My Satellite Setup
sky hd box, quad lnb
My Location
oxfordshire
I have got a sky dish with a quad lnb feeding a sky hd box and a Samsung tv ( I don't use the freeview tunner
on the tv poor aerial signal trees in the sight of transmitter)
in settings on my new tv its got a signal strength and its got a list of weak signals, bbc1 bbc2 itv etc.
signal strength ranges from 30% to 50%
signal quality ranges from 90% to 100%
when it rains it nocks the signal out is there any way I can increase the signal strength.
 
Hows the $ky box with signal levels?

sky box shows signal strength is about the same as tv, with input 2 signal about 30% and input 1 50%,
signal strength 95% on both

You need a bigger dish, only way to improve the satellite signals.
 
Dont bother about the strength - its the quality thats important.

Either

-your dish is marginally misaligned
-your cabling / connections are damaged
- vegetation is getting into your line of sight
- your lnb on the dish is faulty
- your sky box is faulty.

Check your cabling and make sure its not rubbed through on a rough surface, been snagged by a hedge trimmer etc.

The "Sky satellites" are chucking out so much power into the uk you barely need a dish these days! Someone got a signal of sorts on a saucepan lid recently! :D

You lucky people have absolutely no idea how lucky you are!
Advice is correct though! Dish slightly out, or the biggest sunflower on the planet in line of sight to the satellite !
( In which case you could enter the forum sunflower competition and win hands down )

Someone needs to develop a satellite receiver that can be directly inserted into your head, then connected to your fillings or dental bridge, this way no one can say "You can't have that here"

my cable run from my dish to my sky box is about 22 to 20 meters long I can reroute it
to make it a shorter run is that worth a try.

Its worth a try but try if you can reach the dish safely then push gently on either side, then top & bottom whilst the missus watches the signal bars. If the dish is misaligned you will have the quality bars shoot up at some point. Then you just slacken the mounting bolts slightly - enough to move the dish but not so loose the dish moves on its own and gently move the dish a fraction - a couple of mm will be plenty

Also make sure the connections at the dish were waterproofed correctly - its not unknown for the waterproofing to have been skimped on or damaged - I once had a bad signal on one of my dishes & when I disconnected a cable watched in complete astonishment as a over a pint of rainwater dribbled out of it!

FWIW I once hooked a dish up to an entire 100m run of coax cable just to see what happened. Absolutely nothing - the signal was just as strong as on the normal 10m run :D
 
If you can shorten it by half then maybe, or see if the coax is old, there could be cracks in the PVC jacket that has let water in.

Good high quality coax with a quad shield and a pure copper center conductor should always be used for a satellite system, less loss and less DC voltage drop.

Very doubtful. I would try the " dish slightly out of line " route first.
Here in Spain, I have done over 100 metre runs with very little signal degradation, if any. Conversely, I have had problems with too short a cable run, having to extend the cable or insert an attenuator to resolve the problem.
 
Duff (bad) quality cable can be a problem though shortening it may help if on a budget it may be better to replace it altogether. I had quickly made up a scrap bit of cable just Thursday there to use as a patch lead between my meter & dish whilst I was up the ladder realigning my motorised dish, it was just five metres long and I was surprised to see vastly (more than 10% quality reading loss) on my meter versus the longer run that was running into my house. My money is still on slight misalignment though with your situation mate as said by others, I put this forward just as an possible contributing factor. The piece of scrap coaxial I used for the patch lead for reference was double screened aluminum type, I.e. Aluminum braid (32 strand I'd say, not 64) Aluminum foil (Non poly cr@p) on a foam insulated copper clad steal 1mm conductor.

One thing - if you dont have completely safe access to the dish call an expert in. Its not worth falling off a ladder just to save 40 or 50 quid.
 
EBay was full of this all aluminum cable a few years ago, was marketed as a cheap CT100 cable because its non air spaced and double screened.... All be it badly by the quality of its performance. My motorised system I used Webro shotgun cable on and its no where near this crap at all.

So Webro shotgun cable is " no where near this crap at all " , so how bad is it?
