Ubuntu for Netbook

Got a Toshiba NB107 Netbook a few months ago, running Windows 7 Starter.

Truly superb bit of kit, but even though relatively quick (1 min) to boot up and not too heavy on resources (having removed a great deal of OEM crap), I feel it could be even more responsive.

I'm attracted to Ubuntu Netbook Edition and, owing to my slow ADSL, the fact that the Download is 700MB and I want to go to bed soon, I shan't start the Download for burning to USB just yet.


But I should be interested to know if anyone here has tried it and what they really think.

Hints/Tips/Advice all welcome. Even from Naysayers.

Not tried Ubuntu before but Joli OS is Linux based (I think its based on Ubuntu and Debian - these have been mentioned when I`ve been researching the os) I have just installed on someones laptop and its great

Joli OS is kind of like turning your laptop/netbook into a smartphone (without the calling feature) where by you can download apps for BookFace and the other Social networks, theres too many apps to type out here and they`re all (like the os) free

I personally think its great, I run windaft7 on my pc and SWMBO has vista on hers and I`m thinking of removing visa from her pc and installing Joli OS full time

Don't have a Mobile Phone of the modern era, but the O/S looks worth considering.

Had a quick peek - Being cloud based isn't ideal as my ADSL is an unreliable 750 Kbps !!!

But it, like Ubuntu, can run alongside Windows, so I'll bear it in mind and perhaps have a play around with it.

Like I say I`m very very impressed with it and because it`s free and opensource you can make your own tweeks to it or make your own apps for it if you`re that way inclined.

It`s as simple as an OS should be, it has an appstore type market place that is home to all the apps and a simple point and click desktop than anyone who can see straight can use, you see an app you want, be it an internet browser or youtube or bbc news and within a second its there infront of you

It took me less than 30 minutes to install from usb and boots from switched off to desktop (or login screen) in about 10 seconds (give or take a few seconds)
 
Ok, it seems next week's entertainment will be assessing both Ubuntu and Joli.

Sounds interesting I have an old laptop in the loft that I will give this a go on, how much cloud storage do they give and can you buy extra .

I`m not too sure, a mate put it on someones pc and mentioned it was great so when our lass brought her friends laptop round for me to reinstall windows for her, I put it on and was well pleased.

It had all the drivers for the acer aspire so could go online right away and I noticed you could add apps locally so you dont have to be online as such, all the time, maybe just to update apps and sync with your online "desktop" every now and then

When the better half has gone to bed I`ll have a propper look at the laptop and see what else Joli OS can do, see what it does if there is no internet connection and have a poke about on the online side of the OS
 
Just kicked off my Ubuntu 11 Download.

Only two and a half hours to go!!
 
ISO burnt to USB and O/S run from there.

All looking good so far.

Won't fully install until during next week.
 
Sod it.

I installed it just now and am using it.

Dual Boot with Windows 7.

Key will be Battery Life.
 
Did it install with its own boot loader underneath W7 or did you put W7 on after?
 
The first option.

Download ISO to HDD under Windows

Download small Disc Burning Utility as recommended

Burn to USB

Then you can Boot from USB to play around.

If happy, there is an Install button even when Booted from the USB.

It uses WUBI which is embedded in the Download, so no need to worry about it.

It will check for other O/S and offer the option of running alongside or removing.

It will create and size Partitions automatically for numpties like me.

Worst bit is waiting for it to download all the Apps and Updates!

I quite like it.

But the Boot Order prioritises Ubuntu and until I'm fully cogniscent, I am going to alter it so the default is Windows.

Found out how to do it using a Command within Ubuntu, but going to leave it until tomorrow now.

(Don't wish to tempt fate!)


BTW, if I can do this without cocking it up, anybody can.

PS: Ubuntu Netbook itself is now defunct and is covered generically from v11. Ergo, I can and possibly will bung it on the Lappie too.
 
Just executed my first ever Linux Command Line (To change Boot order) - easy peasy!


I feel a Dreambox coming on :eek:
 
Been using it for about a day now and well chuffed: Quicker than Windows to become operable from cold Boot. Very easy to set up and configure. Lots of support. Nice to be able to tinker under the bonnet.
