Hi guys..

I got a bill this morning for unfair usage of internet.. They told me i was a massive 21Gb over my limit and have billed me for £69.95

Has anyone else had this charge since they got their C/S up and running.. ??

Thanks

There is no way that amount of data transfer was caused by CS.

I've attached my usage stats for June.

As you can see, I only downloaded around 15G of the 30G allowance. Of that 15G CS would only amount to a very small part of it. The rest would be large downloads like CD/DVD software images, the odd movie, streaming video etc, etc...

Unfortunately I cant view my upload stats.

Is that 21Gb part of your download allowance or overall usage?

Whats your monthly allowance? Do you download a lot of movies etc?

Without wanting to alarm you that amount of overuse can really only be attributed to some sort of compromise of your PC possibly by a trojan. It could be one that is processing vast amounts of spam, or you may have insecure WIFI connection that someone else i.e. a neighbour is abusing.

My limit is 30Gb per month.. and this 21GB is on top.. So thats a total for April of 51GB..

I do download a few movies.. but maybe 3 in the whole month of April..

Hi Topper,

I live in the country.. and no neighbours within 600 meters..

What format are you downloading your movies, if mpeg2(dvd) they are 7.5 gig each. No way is it your cardshare

Too much detail :-lmaoyou could say the Fresian cows do the same

can I suggest you download

_http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

and do a deep scan whilst in safe mode, it takes a while but may surprise you. 51 Gb is an enormous amount of data, even my busy connections and a compromised pc where I used to work only achieved 30Gb/month

Thanks Topper

I will try this..

Again don't want to scare you, I've been able to gain access to WIFI routers from over a mile away. (I had legal access to them)

The stronger your router signal the easier it is. Most people breaking in will use Yagi's to focus on houses within range - 600 meters is trivial and any router will be fair game at that distance.

It does sound more like a trojan of some kind though.

Is it common in the UK to have download quota limits for broadband?
In Israel we can download as much as we want on a reasonable monthly cost. And the Next Generation Network (NGN) technology with speed of 10M and 15M to start with, will make it easier to DL even more.

I could be wrong here, but aren't the ISP's supposed to warn you that your usage is too high before they slap you with a big bill ?

Yes I agree rick, most reputable ISP's will, at my previous work I was with zen and the moment the particular location went over the limit I was sent an email and then daily I think until problem sorted or month end came to replenish the quota.

In the UK they have had to to avoid the broadband network falling over, even so some area for example Chorley in Lancashire, lots of people have given up with broadband as it became impossible to use after 4pm.
